Fastest through stage 4 was Brendan Cumiskey while overall Derek McGarrity still holds a substantial lead. Derek set consistently fast times through the first 4 stages and he joked here at service. ‘I have a new secret weapon.’ As he said this he held up a spectacle case and admitted that this is the first time on a rally that he has worn glasses. The specs have transformed his judgment of braking distances. Brendan Cumiskey’s time for stage 4 was several seconds faster than McGarrity’s time and Brendan reckons there is more to come from his Fiesta R5 and that he is going to switch on to dry weather slick tyres.
Kenny McKinstry reported that second loop of stages to be better for him but he is still not fully settled in the right hand drive Impreza S14, he is finding it difficult and also reckons that the stages are slippy enough. Martin Cairns felt that he was going a bit better but still getting used to the car. Fintan McGrady had an overshoot in stage 3 with his Escort and is finding it hard to pinpoint braking distances. John Devlin again set the 2 wheel drive pace through stages 3 and 4 but he also admitted to a couple of small overshoots under braking. Jonny & Simon Morrow were laughing as they recounted their Lancer going into a major tank slapper on the way into a square left. They negotiated through without hitting any of the scenery, which co driver Simon said was ‘more a matter of good luck than good judgment’.
Michael & David Nutt have lost many minutes changing a punctured tyre in stage 2 after the cattle grid. Ian Dickson /Stephen Monaghan have retired their Fiesta ST following 2 punctures plus a damaged wheel on the cattle grid in stage 2. Reportedly the organisers have now turned the offending grid upside down so that there is no protruding edge, and we have heard of no problems since. Kyle White went out to stage 3 with his Citroen C2 fitted with wet tyres. When Kyle got out to the Widows Farm stage the road had dried. Kyle felt that he had lost time but in fact although he dropped a couple of seconds to Adam Bustard in stage 3, he was half a second faster in stage 4. Adam and his co driver Aaron Johnston reported no problems through stages 3 and 4 and continued to lead Class 4. Connor McCrossan finished stage 4 with the flanks of his Lancer showing signs of contact with the chicanes.
On Day 2 of WRC Rally Finland after stage 16 Kris Meeke continues to lead. Co driven by Paul Nagle, Citroen man Kris has an advantage over second placed Latvala of 36 seconds. Craig Breen is up to third overall. Remarkable but true! Ogier has dropped back after getting stuck in a ditch when he seemed to have cut a corner too tight. Camilli has retired following what looks like a major accident.
