Following Derek McGarrity’s worry over turbo boost with his Fiesta WRC, a change of spark plugs and coil packs has restored the car to good health and Derek was equal fastest with Brendan Cumiskey through stage 9 and set the quickest time through stage 10. Kenny McKinstry had been moving up the order but his Impreza WRC is reportedly parked off the road in stage 10. Kenny’s co driver Geraldine McBride has phoned to say that they are OK and that it was the power steering on the car that broke. Today was somewhat of a test run for this Subaru following its rebuild after Seamus Leonard crashed it on Fanad Head, the final Donegal Rally stage in June. Also out of the rally is young Kyle White. His Citroen C2 crashed into a chicane in stage 9. Kyle and co-driver Sean Topping are reported to be OK.

Holding a solid 2nd in today’s rally Brendan Cumiskey and his co-driver Ronan O’Kane reported no problems at the end of stage 10 and are on course for the final 2 stages. Martin Cairns slowed slightly to make sure Kenny McKinstry was OK and may be compensated a few seconds for his delay. Emma McKinstry, although lying 3rd o/a, did not appear at all happy at the end of SS10 as her Subaru was showing signs of 2nd gear troubles.

After the finish of Stage 10 the cars have to drive through the sand dunes and on to the beach to get back to the road. Fintan McGrady managed to get his Escort stuck in the sand and needed a tow out. Drew Wylie, who is leading his Historic class with his Escort, and who has Fintan’s son Cormac co-driving, joked. ‘No mud plugging experience!’ Michael Nutt spent most of yesterday getting a standard gearbox into his Civic and is now having gear selection problems. Michael’s main opposition in his class, Ian Dickson, has retired following his contretemps with the cattle grid this morning, so Michael is determined to get his Honda to the finish of the rally.

Some class leaders from the end of SS8 include Ian & Amanda Green in their Peugeot 205GTI 1.9. Ian told us they are having a trouble free run but it is now getting very hot in the car. Second in class 5 behind Ian & Amanda is Simon Michael/Conor Dunlop in the Bath Shack backed Escort. Evidence of how hard Simon is trying is a damaged front left corner and both rear corners showing signs of contact with the scenery. James & Hilary Wilson’s grandson, James Wilson, co-driven by Kyle Diffen, is leading class 4 in his Peugeot 106.
