Whenever all the cars came in after the first loop of stages we discovered that 2 crews – S.McKeown/N. Gourley and D.Sweeney/D/ O’Sullivan – both crews in Escorts, had come into 9th and 10th places overall. Because they are running further back in the rally we do not yet have their times for stage 4.
At the front of the rally Desi Henry was fastest through stage 4 to extend his lead over Peadar Hurson. Just 1.3s separated the 2 cars. Desi Henry commented. ‘We pushed hard but took no chances’. Peadar Hurson said. ‘We had a good clean run and it felt better’. Phillip Allen was 3rd fastest and he told us that he had stuck with a medium compound tyre despite the warm weather, but everything was working well. Marty McCormack remarked that he felt as if he was in a good groove. Jonny Greer also told us that he had had a good run with no problems. Kenny McKinstry was not so happy as his Subaru was in road mode for all of the stage because Kenny forgot to switch on the all singing and dancing thingamajig!
Danny Barry had been in the top 10 after 3 stages but slipped back slightly on 4, his Peugeot 207 S2000 suffering a slipping clutch, and also indulged in a half spin. The Wicklow man is going to nurse the car as best he can, but does no want to do any damage as he is heading to a rally in France a few weeks hence. Adrian Hetherington gave that stage 4 a real good charge and was disappointed to be almost 8s down on Damien Toner. Event sponsor Enda McNulty seemed to be much more on the case in that stage and very nearly equalled Hetherington’s time. Keith White went well in his Mk1 Escort, less than a second slower than Hetherington, but he reports that his Escort crown wheel and pinion is getting very noisy.
Greg McCormack, who has his wife Caroline co-driving, is having a ball in their Skoda S2000 and Greg was appreciably quicker on that second run through the Blue Hills stage. Niall Devine has increased his GpN lead over Clive Kilpatrick to 20s, both in Lancers.
In the R2 category William Creighton had a great run through SS4 to increase his lead over Kyle White to 8s. William said ‘That is the cleanest stage of the three and we had a bit of a mow’ Kyle said ‘I have put my sensible hat on I have to think of points in the NI Championship.’ Kyle not only leads the Juniors in the McGrady NI series, he also heads the 2wd points. Josh McErlean is losing ground as his Citroen has a severe misfire.
Early new from Stage 5 would indicate that Desi Henry set a super time and now leads by 17 seconds, less than a second between Marty McCormack and Peadar Hurson in the battle for second and third place. Jonny Greer and Phillip Allen are loosing ground to the leaders.
