Early times coming in from stage 7 show Guy Wilks again fastest with Hanninen a few seconds slower on that one. Phillip Morrow was 2nd fastest from Mark Higgins. On stage 5 Phillip Morrow was fastest overall with a time of 5.56.1 as against Guy Wilks on 6.00.1. Hanninen and Mark Higgins were just a fraction of a second slower.
All very tight stuff but it is pretty remarkable the way that Philip Morrow in the 2nd works Mitsubishi has picked up his pace this morning. Phillip was very uncomfortable with himself last night, didn’t settle, struggled with the left hand drive, even his glasses were not sitting right!
The International Rally has had to bypass stage 6 which has not re-opened following an accident when Jimmy McRae crashed his Porsche over a bump bridge within sight of the finish of the Archies Rigg stage. It was a big accident, high speed, and Jim and co-driver Andy Richardson were taken out of the stage by ambulance. Jim took time to tell us that he had hurt his wrist but otherwise he was OK. Also that the bridge he crashed on was “flat out last year in the Escort, but definitely wasn’t flat out in the Porsche!” Andy Richardson hurt his back in the accident and both Andy and Jim were being taken to hospital.
Meanwhile the Historic Rally contenders have arrived in here to service and it would appear that Patrick Watts in his Sunbeam Tiger has won the B5 category with John Keatley 2nd and Dessie Nutt 3rd. Neil Calvert won class B4 in his Lotus Cortina. James Stait won class B2 in his MG Midget and Geoff Taylor won cl.B1 in his Imp. Rupert Lomax was best of the Post Historic cars in his Escort from Ernie Graham. Steve Perez, with Stewart Merry on the notes, was 3rd in that category in his fabulous VK Lancia Stratos. Steve told us that he had a few problems last night with the car misfiring a so forth, and then this morning there were not enough stage miles to pull back time. Through it all Steve commented that although some people said he was mad to take the Stratos he enjoyed it and got it to the finish. Ken Foster won the C3 class from Tim Jones. Neil Rudd won cl.C2 in his Escort. Darren Moon from Leeds won the D category in his Escort from Jason Lepley, also in an Escort.
Just outside the top 10 in the International Rally – Wyn Humphreys is 11th, gradually getting into the groove following his layoff from rallying since November. Robert Swann is 12th and battling to get his Subaru running well following some problems last night. Danny Barry is 13th as he recovers from last night’s puncture. Brian O’Mahony is 14th in his Clio and Simon Jean-Joseph 15th in the new C2R2 Max.
Finally for now many people who have watched the television coverage of the British Rally Championship will be familiar with the dulcet tones of Robbie Head. Robbie is going to tackle the legendary Scottish Six Day Trial in a couple of weeks on a 300cc Gas Gas. Apart from it being a long cherished ambition of Robbie’s, he along with 3 other riders, are aiming to raise funds for the Colin McRae Vision Foundation. The money will then be channelled to a children’s charity. More information on trialsvision.com.
