The sleepy little village of Lurganboy certainly came alive this morning as the finish and stop of the classic opening stage of this Sligo Rally was right in the centre of the one and only village street. Sean Gallagher’s Subaru was the first car to appear at the finish, not number 1 seed Adrian McElvaney who was late starting the stage because of intercom problems. As more of the top cars appeared there was news of 2 cars off the road, Stuart Darcy’s Subaru and top MSA Asphalt C/ship contender David Kynaston in the Audi.

David Mann’s Subaru clattered into the stage finish and immediately pulled over to the side. David and co driver Alun Cook frantically tried to repair an errant turbo pipe. A representative of Glencar Water, John Davey, was there and besides giving all the drivers and co drivers a bottle of his splendid refreshment, he also ran and up to his van to get Alun Cook enough tools to effect a repair. The Subaru eventually got going but was pretty late heading out to stage 2, Dough Mountain.

Adrian McElvaney said at stage finish that apart from his intercom woes he had caught and passed 2 cars in the stage which must have taken a few valuable seconds. Sean Gallagher had some problem with the gears. Raymond Johnston lost time when he caught up with David Mann’s struggling Impreza. Gary McPhillips had a brilliant run, sweat pouring off him when he brought his Escort into the finish having set the fastest time and lead the rally.

John Price seemed to have a good run and recorded a time of 11.15. Joe McHugh was another who pulled in to the side of the road in Lurganboy, one of the rear tyres of his Escort Cosworth completely worn through and burst. Trevor Mulligan lost time when he spun his Escort. Eugene Ferry reported a very big moment at stage start when the car lost grip on cold tyres. Sean Devine finished the stage with the front of his Subaru smashed and wheels pointing in opposite directions.

Paul Kiely had a good run to lead group N. Shaun Gallagher was out for the first time in the little bright green MET liveried Citroen C2R2 and he was a wee bit worried about his rear left suspension having caught a rock at a junction. Simon Mauger, another of the Asphalt Championship drivers, lost time with power steering loss. Steve Simpson was the fastest of the Asphalt contenders and he reported a clean run in his Accent WRC.
