Kevin Lynch, co driven today by Francis Regan, was fastest on the first 2 stages this morning to build up a 15s lead over Kenny McKinstry. Kenny lost a small bit of time on stage 2 when he caught up with Paddy White’s Focus which had been slowed with a slipping clutch. Unfortunately stage 3 did not run because of an incident. This has reportedly now been resolved and the stage will run the 2nd time through as stage 6. Kevin Lynch commented when he came into service. “We’re getting it all together it is going well”. Kenny McKinstry told us a more disturbing story and said. “I was just catching up with Paddy’s Focus, and a spectator stepped out into the road behind the Ford, really scared me. It just reminded me of that awful Donegal accident. I wasn’t able to concentrate on the notes or anything for about 2 miles”. Paddy White was a bit down in the dumps when he came into service and told us about the slipping clutch. He reckons it will not be possible to change it and his only hope of keeping going will be to nurse it.
Damian Tourish to lead the Mitsubishi Lancers but his time was 7.10 for that 2nd stage whereas Colm Murphy did a 7.04. Donegal man Damian told us that the brake pads in his car, which were also in it for the Donegal Rally, started to go on that 2nd stage and the brake pedal went really soft. As for Colm Murphy he just said that he was taking it steady enough. Owen Murphy is still having problem with that loose wire to the ECU and every time the car hit a bump it was cutting out. Brendan Cumiskey had a better run through that 2nd stage and was fairly well on the group N pace, as was Fergal Costello who laughed and said. “We’re flying!”
Mark Courtney in the Celica reported a big spin at a square left but otherwise OK. Tom Holton in his similar Toyota has just squeezed ahead following a good run through stage 2. John Stone in the Metro 6R4 said he is driving “like an eejit” and his total now is 15.08. Mark Jasper in the other Metro is on 15.01. Pat Donegan continues to lead the 2 wheel drive contingent, Pat setting a fantastic pace. Maurice Moffett in the Starlet is just off the leaderboard, Maurice never a great fan of wet roads and reckoned he made a poor tyre choice anyway.
Sam Smyth put his Escort backwards into a hedge on the opening stage but dropped little time and his total if 15.46. Peter Wilson is going well in his little Civic despite losing a few seconds when he caught an Escort and his total is 15.37. Emma McKinstry had a good run through that 2nd stage and she is lying just outside the leaderboard on 15.18.
