Reigning Dunlop National Champion Patrick Elliott reckoned that the opening stages would suit him and his Impreza WRC S12B because of their fast, flowing nature. The time sheets back the Cavan man’s thoughts and he was much quicker than his closest challenger, Niall Maguire, through the 19.7km of that opening Kilbarron test. Maguire reported that the stages were slippery in places, a bit patchy. Third on the road Kevin Barrett lost quite a few seconds, Kevin felt that his Triton Showers Subaru had a puncture although there was no sign of a flat tyre at the finish of the stage. Jim Harrison had a respectable enough time considering he has been away from rallying for 2 years and he is still bedding himself in.

Garry Jennings was the fastest of the group N drivers although he reckoned he didn’t find a good rythym on the stages. It is nip and tuck really between the top GpN drivers so far, just a second or two in it. Anthony O’Halloran reported the roads slippy. While Kevin Kelleher felt that his choice of slick tyres was the wrong move. Thomas Fitzmaurice had a very good run and reported no problems. Trevor & Kenny Bustard were off the pace in their new Lancer, Donegal man Trevor said – “We’ll have to up the ante”.

In the battle of the Mk2 Escorts Des Moore was fastest on 11.37. Trevor Mulligan, despite intercom problems, did 11.43. Jim McKenna in the Starlet recorded 11.42. Gary Reidy, with Diarmuid Falvey on the notes, recorded 11.59, but they were hampered by a sticking throttle cable in their Escort. David Percy in the Escort Maxi was running slightly out of order having stopped to adjust his seat belts at the stage start, but then he set a good time of 11.45. Jack & Paul Maguire had a good run in their Escort Cosworth, but they pulled in at stage finish as the car’s temperature gauge was up to 106. They were making a hurried check to the fan switches and connections at stage finish when we left and hopefully they will get going. Some further times include: Adrian Quinn 11.38: Mike Quinn 11.48: Ed Synan 11.50: Tommy Doyle, driving an Escort today, 11.58: Paul Elliott 11.40: More later: BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON www.rallynews.net
