Patrick Elliott was fastest through stage 2 in his Subaru to reinforce his stunning time for stage 1. This boosts Patrick’s lead to 25s. Main change to the leaderboard is that Garry Jennings has dropped out of 5th place and the group N lead, his black Lancer marooned a quarter of the way through stage 2. Garry is reportedly working under the bonnet. There is no sign of him yet here at service. This leaves Thomas Fitzmaurice leading the group N category following his stunning time through stage 2, 5s faster than Anthony O’Halloran and 6s up on Kevin Kelleher for the stage.

When Patrick Elliott arrived in here to service he said the roads were still slippy but he had no problem with the car and everything was fine. It was much the same story with Niall Maguire in 2nd. While Jim Harrison in 3rd told us that he is still trying to get into the groove, that “It takes a while”. Jim’s co driver Harvey Bell showed us his time cards and road book which were all signed at the edges just from the heat of the Subaru’s transmission tunnel, which give some indication of the work that the car is doing. Kevin Barrett in 4th felt that on the first stage the car may have been suffering from a puncture but at stage finish the tyres looked fine, so he reckons now that there is something not quite right in the transmission and the Subaru is a bit “giddy”.

In the race for group N Thomas Fitzmaurice in his Lancer is really going for it. Kevin Kelleher feels that he picked too hard a slick tyre and it was “just like Galway last year”. Anthony O’Halloran was sweating hard at stage finish and he said. “Its very greasy”. Eamonn Daly softened the rear of his new Lancer and reckons it was better through the 2nd stage. Other drivers on the group N pace include Sean Flanagan in his Impreza. Sean has a different co driver for this event, normal man on the notes Brian Duggan is in Dubai at a wedding and Brian Miller has stepped into the breach. Adrian Quinn was a few seconds off the pace through the opening stage, finding it very slippy, his total 21.33. Trevor & Kenny Bustard are also struggling, they reckon their new Lancer is set too soft and is rolling on the high speed corners, their total is 21.40. Fergal Costello’s group N Lancer blew its engine 1 mile into the opening stage and that was the end of his rally.

In the Mk2 Escort battle Des Moore leads from Marrk Geraghty with Trevor Mulligan just a few seconds in arrears. Gary Reidy has lost a few seconds through SS2 and thinks his Escort’s rear tyres are too wide. Ed Synan is well on the pace in his class 13 Escort and Jim McKenna in the class 11 Starlet is setting a scorching pace, his total 21.37 but is 2nd in the class to Geraghty. Mike Quinn is 3rd in class 14. Brian O’Mahony is lying 10th d in his S1600 Clio on a total of 20.55. David Percy told us that his Escort Maxi is 100 per cent and his total is 21.37 so he is well on the pace. Just outside the leaderboard James McNulty is 11th and Jack Maguire got going after his overheating problem and is lying 12th. Sean Dillon has retired his Micra with a broken drive shaft at the start of the first stage. Paul Monaghan’s Corolla is also out with sheared wheel studs.
