Former multiple Dunlop National Champion Niall Maguire was fastest on stage 3 but was 10s down on Patrick Elliott through stage 4 which leaves Elliott still with a very clear lead of 31s. Patrick stalled his Subaru in stage 3 and had a very slight spin in stage 4, but nothing of any great significance. Maguire was using a different tyre for the 2nd loop of stages and it seemed to make a fair difference. Jim Harrison remains in 3rd place and is not challenging the cars in front, Jim said he is treating the rally very much as a test session now as he continues his rally comeback.

Kevin Barrett thought there may have been something wrong with his Subaru transmission making his car feel giddy, but he is starting to think now that it was more within himself and his times have improved somewhat.

Kevin Kelleher continues to lead group N, he stole a march on Anthony O’Halloran through stage 3 and was 14s quicker, but Ruan man O’Halloran staged a comeback in stage 4 and was just 1s down. Thomas Fitzmaurice had led group N but dropped 30s in stage 3 when his Lancer exhaust manifold came loose. He was able to borrow some tools from a farmer and tighten the manifold up and got through stage 4 and in here to service without any great drama.

Brian O’Mahony reported all well in his Clio S1600 and he is holding his place on the leaderboard. Eamonn Daly is happier with his new Lancer now and his times are very gradually stepping up. Eoighan Fogarty was up to 13th o/a despite a spin in his Lancer but a stage 4 puncture has dented his chances of a top result.

Trevor Mulligan has inched ahead of Des Moore to take in the lead of the 2 wheel drive. Trevor lost a few seconds in stage 3 when he caught another car. Jim McKenna is losing a small bit of ground now, his Starlet outgunned as the roads dry. Gerry Smith at the moment leads class 12 in his Escort but there are still times coming in. Gary Reidy & Diarmuid Falvey have retired their Escort with a blown clutch. David Percy is holding 18th o/a and is leading class 13 from Ed Synan – again there may be more times to come in.

Last Friday night’s function in the Commons Hotel in Cork raised €20,000 and still more coming in for the Paul Gallagher Fund. Pat Nolan is here in service selling raffle tickets for a co-drive with Billy Coleman in the Metro 6R4 on West Cork Rally and the proceeds from this will also go towards the Gallagher Fund. In addition the Paul Gallagher Recovery Fund has been started in Donegal and Galway man Tom Halliday has some tickets on sale for that. First prize is €5000 plus several other prizes. Paul remains in a serious condition in the Mater Hospital in Dublin although we are told that he will soon be transferred to the rehabilitation centre in Dunlaoghaire. Following Paul’s serious accident on Galway Rally he needs all the help that we can give him and our best wishes are with Paul and his family.

Jakes Kelly is acting as competitor liaison officer here today and his sister Mairiead has paid a visit to the service area with her beautiful 6 week old twin daughters, Eabha and Orla. Uncle Jakes is very proud of his two new nieces!!
