Patrick Elliott & Paul Goodman really lived up to their Dunlop National Champions title today, dominating this Nenagh Rally, their victory margin 2m19s over Jim Harrison/Harvey Bell. Kevin Kelleher and his co driver Paddy Robinson had a great run to take the GpN category and finish 5th o/a in their Lancer. While Trevor Mulligan put in a huge effort at the end to put his 2 wheel drive victory beyond all doubt as well as finishing 9th o/a in his Escort. Patrick Elliott brought his immaculate silver Subaru into the finish here at the Abbey Court Hotel and took time before the champagne celebrations to say. “It was a very tough day’s rallying and I’m glad to be here. It’s a great start on the first rally of the year, the car was great. My plan this morning was to keep it smooth and calm, not too fast, and it worked well. It was a pity Niall got the puncture”. Second placed Jim Harrison said. “Very enjoyable day, we didn’t really have a moment. I came to the rally to get some competition mileage before West Cork and it worked out well, 2nd place is brilliant, admittedly at Niall’s expense”. A rather dejected Niall Maguire said. “I’m gutted, 17kms on a flat tyre and I don’t even know where I got it.” Kevin Barrett in 4th said. “Good day, now I have to up the pace for Mayo”.

Kevin Kelleher in 5th and the group N winner said: “It was a good day and I really enjoyed it”. When asked was he going to continue in the Dunlop National series or the Tarmac, and indeed was he going to compete on his home West Cork Rally, all Kevin would say was “I’m sticking with this car, probably won’t do any more Internationals. I have no real plans; just do the rallies I enjoy”. Anthony O’Halloran was on the pace throughout the 8 tough special stages and was always just a fraction off Kelleher’s pace, but took a good 2nd GpN. Thomas Fitzmaurice charged through the last couple of stages to just pip Sean Flanagan for 3rd GpN.

Des Moore had no real answer to Trevor Mulligan’s charge over the final stages and Des had to be content with 2nd rear wheel drive and 2nd in class 14. Mike Quinn was 3rd in that ultra competitive cl.14. Jim McKenna had a good run through the day in his Starlet to win class 11 and he joked at the end. “I’m going to have to get a lot fitter for this job”. David Percy brought his Escort Maxi into the top 20 and win class 13, just 3s up on West Coast Champion Ed Synan. Brian O’Mahony had been holding a very solid 9th o/a in his Clio but unfortunately the car ran out of petrol one mile from the end of the final stage. Donegal man James McNulty retired when holding a top 20 place, his Lancer suffered a blown fuse in the ignition. Gerry Smith spun out and blocked stage 6 with his Mk2 Escort.

The Willie Loughman Forestry Rally has 65 entries received up until today. Seeding will be carried out tomorrow evening and entry list will be published on Tuesday.

Finally for now, well done to Clerk of the Course Cathal McGrath and all his hard working team from the Birr & District MC for putting on such a well organised event. There were also many volunteers from many clubs who helped out on this major event and well done to them as well. Our thanks to all who helped and supported the RallyNews service. Our thanks also to Angus Sealy (Results) and we hope his wife Jane will be recovered and home from hospital soon.
