RALLY NEWS NO.5 Service/Saturday

UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 4 Clogagh
1st (3) Liam McCarthy/Kieran Murphy (Corolla WRC) 40.44.7
2nd (4) Jim Harrison/Harvey Bell (Impreza WRC) 41.14.5
3rd (5) Denis Cronin/Helen O'Sullivan (Impreza WRC) 41.26.0
4th (2) John Dalton/Gwynfor Jones (Darrian) 41.27.1
5th (6) Phil Collins/Derek Brannigan (Escort) 42.13.7
6th (7) Keith Cronin/Greg Shinnors (Lancer N) 42.29.7

Through the Clogagh stage Keith Cronin was again fastest but by just half a second from his Uncle Denis in his Subaru WRC. Keith told us after the stage that he is hoping to get the front left suspension strut on his Lancer changed here at service before tackling the famous Ring stage. Denis Cronin said that he is bedding himself in, gradually stepping up the pace. Rally leader Liam McCarthy was in much the same mode and he said. “Not pushing too hard so far”. John Dalton is glad of the drying roads, his rear wheel drive Darrian starting to really pick up the pace, so it’s all becoming a good race at the front. Jim Harrison was losing time hand over fist through that loop having made the wrong call on tyres. He opted for an intermediate tyre and really on the bone dry roads the only thing going to be competitive is a slick tyre. Jim said. “I knew by the third corner I was wrong”.

Ed O’Callaghan/Ger Clancy have crashed their Escort out on stage 3 and have been taken to hospital as a precaution. Their accident has caused some of the cars to be re-routed on the alternative road book.

Phil Collins continues to be the best of the Mk2 Escorts and he said. “Steady away, middle of the road!” Ashl3ey Field is unofficially in 7th place at the moment in his Darrian and he said. “We’re slowly building up speed”. Mark Nangle, 2nd in GpN with his Impreza, had a lucky escape on stage 4 when he knocked a lump out of the Subaru’s front rim and the tyre didn’t go down. John & Alice Quinn from Kinsale are having some throttle cable and gearbox troubles with their white Chevette but are still going. Sarah Moynihan is setting some reasonably competitive times now despite her Lancer running on slightly reduced turbo pressure and also having been blocked on a stage earlier.

Paul Manton had been leading the Citroen Racing Trophy contenders in his C2R2 but we have reports that the car has blown up in stage 4. Adrian McElhinney seems to be setting the pace but young Sam Moffett is also going well and Barry Evans reckons he made a better tyre choice for that loop and he is right in the hunt.

Frank Kelly in his blue Mk2 Escort lost quite a few seconds to Adrian Hetherington in stage 4. Adrian’s total now is 43.57.9 and Frank is on 44.03.1. Fintan Canty continues to set good times in his Escort and his total is 43.46.5. Leonard Downey in the sunbeam is on 44.00.3.
