RALLY NEWS No.8 - After SS9 - Sunday @ 11:20:27

RALLY NEWS NO.8 Service/Sunday 11.20

UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 9 – Sam's Cross
1st (3) Liam McCarthy/Kieran Murphy (Corolla WRC) 1.19.20.4
2nd (2) John Dalton/Gwynfor Jones (Darrian) 1.19.54.1
3rd (5) Denis Cronin/Helen O'Sullivan (Impreza WRC) 1.20.05.6
4th (6) Phil Collins/Derek Brannigan (Escort) 1.22.19.8
5th (7) Keith Cronin/Greg Shinnors (Lancer N) 1.23.07.1
6th (15) Manus Kelly/Donal Barrett (Escort) 1.25.00.9
7th (17) Frank Kelly/Liam Brennan (Escort) 1.25.12.6
8th (20) Leonard Downey/Mark Murphy (Escort) 1.25.55.4
9th (36) Damien McCarthy/Eamonn Hayes (Civic) 1.26.34.6
10th (34) Marty McCormack/Liam Moynihan (Citroen C2R2 Max) 1.26.40.1

The opening stage of this Sunday loop provided no dramas. Keith Cronin was fastest from Liam McCarthy from John Dalton. Manus Kelly moved from 7th to 6th ahead of Frank Kelly. Liam McCarthy reported all well at stage finish. John Dalton in the Darrian had a major moment but won’t be too unhappy at being just .7 of a second down on the Corolla WRC in front. Denis Cronin is having to hold his Subaru in 4th and 5th gears. Keith Cronin thought he had a poor run so was surprised to be fastest. Damien McCarthy had a huge moment, knocked a big lump out of a rear wheel rim, happily the tyre did not deflate. Marty McCormack had a very good run in his new Citroen C2R2 Max. Marty was hampered somewhat yesterday by a small electrical problem but all is well now.

Overnight class leaders include: John Dalton/Gwynfor Jones led class 14 but because John is 2nd overall Phil Collins/Derek Brannigan are shown as leading the class in their Escort. Keith Cronin/Greg Shinnors led GpN in their Lancer (Cl.6): Frank Kelly/Liam Brennan led cl.13 in their Escort. Hopefully Frank will have the exhaust manifold of the car fixed for this morning. Young Damien McCarthy and his co-driver Eamonn Hayes put up a brilliant performance to lead class 11 and they are 9th o/a in their Civic. Marty McCormack/Liam Moynihan were 10th o/a and led class 6 in their new Citroen C2R2 Max. Adrian McElhinney/Shane Buckley were 3rd in that cl.6 behind Daragh O’Riordan/Sean McCarthy in their Clio S1600. Adrian won the Saturday leg of the Citroen Racing Trophy. Sam Moffett was 2nd C2R2 and Barry Evans 3rd. Thomas O’Rourke/Thomas Scallon (Civic) led class 3. Steve Roberts/Adrian Hayes led cl.12 in their Escort. John Stafford/Richard Cleary (Darrian) led cl.9. Victor & Susan Beamish (Nova) led cl.10. Stephen Carey/Mark Lee (Civic) led cl.2. Colin Byrne/Stephen O’Donovan (Ford Ka) led class 5. John Buttimer/Declan Buttimer (Impreza) led class 8.

The reason for Jim Harrison’s retirement yesterday was that he was pulling away from a square right junction in stage 8 when the car lost drive. There was no smoke or oil and no warning, but the flywheel was turning and the front pulley wasn’t.

WRC CYPRUS RALLY: Sebastien Loeb scored his 50th WRC win in his Citroen 27s ahead of Hirvonen’s Focus. Petter Solberg was 3rd and Ogier went off 1km from the end of the final stage. Patrick Sandell won the Production category. (our thanks to Barry Meeke of stagetimes.com)
