Mizzly damp conditions prevailed as the drivers tackled the opening Mount Eagle stage and as can be seen above Kevin Barrett was fastest in his Triton Showers Subaru to lead the rally. No.2 seed Patrick Elliott made a mess of the tight hairpin left which probably accounted for a few seconds. Garry Jennings was fastest of the group N drivers. Donie O’Sullivan in the new Proton S2000 recorded a time of 7.47. Some other times included – Alan Ring 7.43: Kevin Kelleher 7.45: Anthony O’Halloran 7.48: Sean Flanagan was also on 7.45 and Brian O’Mahony in the Clio was 7.53. UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 2 HEADLEYS BRIDGE
1st (1) Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman (Impreza WRC) 16.22
(2) Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Impreza WRC) 16.22
3rd (3) Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally (Impreza WRC) 16.28
4th (4) Darren Gass/Diarmuid Falvey (Impreza WRC) 16.54
5th (14) Mike Quinn/Grainne McEnery (Escort) 17.10
6th (6) Garry Jennings/David Moynihan (Lancer N) 17.22

Patrick Elliott was fastest through stage 2 to move up from 3rd to equal first with Niall Maguire. Garry Jennings continues to lead group N despite a misfire creeping into his Lancer. Elliott commented here at service. “A bad start stalling at the acute left. Overall I’m not committed enough, not carrying enough speed through the corners and I think the engine mapping needs a bit of work”. Niall Maguire said. “I was just a bit too cautious in a few places but I picked a softer compound tyre this time and it worked well”. Kevin Barrett who led after the first stage said. “That 2nd stage is very fast and it didn’t suit us”. Darren Gass admitted to catching sight of Barrett’s Subaru towards the stage finish but then spun at the last junction so threw away his advantage. Donie O’Sullivan’s co driver Paul Nagle told us. “The Proton has an intermittent misfire at low revs especially out of junctions, then when it gets going its flying, bouncing off the rev limiter, but we don’t have the legs of the WRC cars.

Garry Jennings is planning to change to spark plugs on his Lancer to see if it can cure the misfire. Alan Ring said. “The car is fine. I might make an adjustment to the suspension but it is a 50-50 call”. Kevin Kelleher commented. “I picked slick tyres for the first stage but it was too brave a call for the second”. Thomas Fitzmaurice told us. “My car is down on power a small bit, I worked very hard on the last stage on the uphill stuff but threw it away on the downhill stuff at the end. I’m disgusted with myself”. Brian O’Mahony reckons his Clio is geared for too high a speed and he is losing out on acceleration. Anthony O’Halloran admitted to being a bit too cautious on the 2nd stage. Sean Flanagan was just glad to get through Mt Eagle, a stage he has never finished. Sean Enright is hoping it will stay dry to make his tyre choice easier. Des Moore lost time at the tight hairpin in stage 1. Ed Synan told us his Escort brake pedal is going right down to the floor. Trevor Bustard feels his Lancer is down on power. Kevin O’Donoghue had a spin in stage 2 in his Escort. Gary Reidy had an overshoot on the 2nd stage, stalled on the first and said his Escort is flying. Charlie Hickey is trying a new sequential box in his Escort today and finding it difficult but it will be good practice for his home Rally of the Lakes.
