RALLY NEWS No.5 - After SS6 - Sunday @ 16:09:21

RALLY NEWS NO.5 Service/Fels Point Tralee/Sunday 4.15
UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 6 Mt. Eagle
1st (2) Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Impreza WRC) 49.48
2nd (1) Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman (Impreza WRC) 49.50
3rd (4) Darren Gass/Diarmuid Falvey (Impreza WRC) 50.06
4th (14) Mike Quinn/Grainne McEnery (Escort) 52.20
5th (6) Garry Jennings/David Moynihan (Lancer N) 52.37
6th (8) Kevin & Martin Kelleher (Lancer N) 52.38
7th (7) Alan Ring/Adrian Deasy (Lancer N) 52.56
8th (5) Donie O'Sullivan/Paul Nagle (Proton S2000) 53.10
9th (17) Des Moore/Arthur Kierans (Escort) 53.25
10th (9) Thomas Fitzmaurice/Fionn Foley (Lancer N) 53.39

On stage 6 Niall Maguire set the fastest time, 3s up on Patrick Elliott to move into a 2s lead with two stages remaining. Just as finely poised is the situation in group N where Kevin Kelleher has turned in some super quick times to move within 1s of group N leader Garry Jennings.

A big disappointment for everyone is that Darren Gass and his co driver Diarmuid Falvey have retired their McKinstry Subaru at the end of stage 6. Their Subaru landed heavily over a jump just over 1km into the stage and one of the front suspension struts broke. Although the front wheel was flopping about Darren kept the car going to the stage finish and was only 8s slower than his first run over the same stage. There was no way he could keep going through the final stages with the broken suspension which is quite a shame as he was only 12s away from the lead leaving service and at the speed Darren was going at it could have made for a very interesting finish. Paul Elliott/Brian Doherty were up to 11th o/a but their Lancer has stopped in stage 6 with transmission trouble. Also stopped in stage 6 is Frank Sweeney/Seamus O’Connor, their Escort reportedly missing a wheel. Further news on the retirement of Sean Flanagan & Brian Duggan, they have both arrived back at HQ none the worse for wear although their Subaru is quite badly damaged which must put a question mark over their run on the Circuit of Ireland at Easter.

Jack & Paul Maguire are starting to make good headway in their Escort Cosworth after a slow start. They are now up to 13th o/a and leading class 15. Jim McKenna has moved into the lead of cl.11 in his very rapid rwd Starlet. Willie & Dorothy Cavanagh lead class 12 in their Escort. Pat Ryan (Escort) leads cl.9. Mark Kane in his Citroen has moved into the lead of cl.6 from Eamonn Hanley (Peugeot). Brian O’Mahony was leading that class but has dropped back following brake troubles with his Clio S1600. The engineers fitted new brakes to the car at first service but it looks as if one of the new discs has warped causing brake pad knock off and consequently a soft pedal. Mike O’Leary & Mike Moriarty in the hired Christy Carey Lancer lost a fair bit of time this morning until they found out that there was a problem with a battery lead. They now have that fixed and they are going well now. Des Moore is 2nd in cl.14 to the flying Mike Quinn and Des has had some small anti roll bar problem with his Escort.
