Niall Maguire was fastest on the opening stage. Adrian McElvaney was quickest on stage 2 and then Niall was fastest on stage 3. McElvaney told us he is in real trouble now with the gearbox, it is selecting gears at random, completely unprompted and 5th gear seems to have gone altogether which doesn’t sound so good. Maguire said he was caught on the hop at the start of stage 2. He wasn’t settled when the timekeeper shouted “Go” and he didn’t have the anti lag at the right setting. Kevin Barrett in 3rd freely admitted that he made a real mess of stage 3, just didn’t get into his stride, no feel for the car or the road. Sean Gallagher has held 4th place from the start. His co-driving daughter told us that they have had a few niggly problems, nothing serious, overall going OK.

Maurice Moffett leads the 2 wheel drive charge but it is not all plain sailing for Maurice as he had one spin in stage 2 and then on the last couple of miles in here to service for some reason his Starlet seemed to jam in 4th gear. Adrian Hetherington had a spin and had to reverse which cost a few seconds. Des Moore was a fairly tight 2nd in the two wheel drive category but he has dropped a minute or more in stage 3 when his Escort’s throttle cable became detached from the pedal. Anthony Hand continues to set good times and said he has backed off a little bit as his big class rival Jim McKenna didn’t emerge from stage 1. We can only presume that Jim’s Starlet has had mechanical problems. Frank Wray was 7th o/a on the first stage but pulled to the side in stage 3, his Lancer reportedly suffering a broken drive shaft.

Danny McBride continues to lead group N but the Donegal man said he is not himself today and only driving at 85 per cent. Raymond Drury told us that he had a big fright on the first stage and his car is just not handling well, giving him no confidence. Elaine Landers/Colm McKenna in the black twin cam at No.98 have returned to service early, the car was overheating. John & James Cairns lost a few seconds with some intercom troubles and also an overshoot. Jack Maguire said his Escort Cosworth is not handling well at all, Jack’s total 29.43. Damien Hagan seemed to be running late after stage 3 and we are still waiting for his times.

In the Citroen Racing Trophy for C2R2s Barry Evans has moved in front on a total of 20.49. Sam Moffett is 2s down and Martin Tynan is 3rd 7s in arrears. Mark Kane is plus 17s. Adrian McElhinney plus 23s. Sean Agnew is 1m16s down after a small off road excursion. Paul Manton was in the hunt but lost 5m when an oil pipe came loose.
