The drivers were all sweating hard when they came to the end of the 16.58km opening Loughduff stage. As can be seen above it was Kevin Barrett who was fastest from Niall Maguire. Niall, who has won the rally 4 times before, told us. “It wasn’t so good for me, I found it very bumpy”. When Kevin Barrett’s Triton Showers Subaru came to a halt he said. “It went well but very tricky in places”. Sean Devine turned in a real good time considering he hasn’t done a rally since the Sunseeker back in February, and he said. “Just getting the feel of this”.

Fastest in Group N was Neil McCance but his Lancer had a damaged rear left wheel at stage finish so he hurried off to get that changed before the next stage. John McGlaughlin was 2nd fastest in GpN. John has just enrolled in the Evo Challenge and switched to Pirelli tyres which is all part of the Challenge, and he was well pleased at the stage finish as he quickly got the feel of the different rubber. Seamus Heron hired a group N Lancer from Stan Harper for today and he was 3rd fastest in the category. Seamus commented at stage finish. “This is all new technology for me”. We think he meant the HANS device more than the Lancer! Stanley Ballantine who is one of the front runners in the Evo Challenge lost time with a sticking throttle on his Lancer and he had 3 overshoots at square corners. His co driver Donnacha O’Callaghan rolled his eyes skywards and muttered. “Very scary stuff”. Brendan Cumiskey is the reigning Evo Champion and he reported a good clean run.

Fastest 2 wheel drive through the stage was Russell Woods with a brilliant time. Peter Wilson was 2nd fastest in his Civic. Peter was held up for a few seconds behind Anthony Hand’s accident. Hands’ Escort was stuck in a ditch and the spectators were trying to get him going, but if they did it must have taken quite a few minutes because we waited for another 10 cars and there was no sign of the Escort at stage finish.

Some other 2 wheel drive times include: Raymond Drury on 10.14 in his Escort. Donegal man Daniel Conaghan did 10.23. As did James Cassidy in his Escort and Gerry Smith did 10.27.

We are still awaiting times for the first of the Citroen Racing Trophy C2R2s. In the UK part of the Trophy we do know that Marty McCormack was top points scorer on the Jim Clark Rally yesterday and won 2000 euro with a bonus of a 1000 for finishing 2nd in two wheel drive. Marty had a great run and was ahead of Craig Breen for example until Craig’s Fiesta cried enough with mechanical problems. In Sardinia on the world championship Latvala has won from Hirvonen with Loeb 3rd following his puncture. However Loeb may be under FIA investigation for driving without seat belts after his wheel change!
