RALLY NEWS NO.3 Service/Sunday

UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 3 LAVEY
1st (1) Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Impreza WRC) 24.18
2nd (3) Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally (Impreza WRC) 24.21
3rd (4) Sean Devine/Paul McLaughlin (Impreza WRC) 24.39
4th (6) Neil McCance/Sean Ferris (Lancer N) 25.33
5th (5) John McGlaughlin/Crawford Henderson (Lancer N) 25.37
6th (9) Russell Woods/Martin Byrne (Escort) 25.43
7th (15) Peter Wilson/John Kilmurray (Civic) 26.09
8th (30) Paul Elliott/Brian Doherty (Lancer N) 26.14
9th (141) Seamus Heron/Gerry McVeigh (Lancer N) 26.15
10th (11) Brendan Cumiskey/Andrew Grennan (Lancer N) 26.17

Following stage 2 early leader Kevin Barrett was then equal overall with Niall Maguire and in stage 3 Maguire was 3s faster so moved into a 3s lead here at service. Niall’s co driver Enda Sherry said. “I think there has been a lorry load of bumps dumped into these stages overnight!” Kevin Barrett said. “Tough going out there”. Sean Devine lost a few seconds in stage 3 when a pool of water soaked his Subaru screen and he couldn’t get the wipers to work.

Neil McCance got the rear wheel of his Lancer changed between stages 1 and 2 and stayed on the pace to be faster than John McGlaughlin through stage 2 and then dropped a couple of seconds in stage 3. Neil still leads Group N overall. Paul Elliott is running further back and he set some very solid times through the opening stages to hold 3rd in Group N ahead of Seamus Heron. Seamus is really in a deep end on his first run in the Group N Lancer and also using different tyres so he’s doing pretty well all things considered. Pat Kirk was going well but dropped a fair bit of time on the 2nd stage with a very time consuming spin. Stanley Ballantine is also down the order, his Lancer still suffering from throttle troubles. Willie Mavitty is on a total of 26.54 and is taking it pretty steady although he also lost some time with a spin on 3. Both McCance and McGlaughlin are now registered for the Evo Challenge so they are battling for maximum points. No times yet for Challenge leader Liam Egan who was reseeded from No.10 slot to run further back.

In the battle for 2 wheel drive Russell Woods continues to set the pace, and caught and past Raymond Conlon in the black Corolla in stage 3. Russell said he lost no time really getting past the twin cam. Conlon told us that his Corolla is on the wrong springs at the rear and the car is virtually undriveable. Raymond Drury was slowed through stage 3, reason as yet unknown but he has dropped out of the reckoning. Daniel Conaghan also lost time in stage 3 when he smacked the front left corner of his Escort on a square right over gravel. Early indications are that Peter Wilson in his Civic is the fastest class 11 car through stage 3 so he’s in line to receive the HASS Border Championship Drive of the Day Award, providing he finishes the rally. Further news on Anthony Hand putting his Escort off the road – the accident happened at a cautioned crest jump into a kick bump and the Escort landed in the hedge. Anthony has sprained his wrist and has been taken to hospital. Also off at the same spot is Gordon Rogers.
