Following Keith Cronin’s fastest time through the opening stage Patrick Elliott was fastest through stage 2 by 2s from Cronin and then on stage 3 Ballyneale Elliott and Cronin tied for fastest. Patrick did say that he had a slight time loss at a junction around an island when his Subaru stalled, but otherwise everything was OK. Keith Cronin admitted that he didn’t have a great run through stage 3, that he could smell gear oil and he found it distracting. Interestingly, Garry Jennings, who was running next car to Cronin reckoned that there was a little oil on the road through that 3rd stage and also a skiff of rain left Garry’s Lancer windscreen smeared. Niall Maguire seemed almost frustrated when he arrived in to service and he said. “I can’t do anything about it”. He was referring to Patrick Elliott’s times. Kevin Barrett was equal with Maguire through stage 3 but was a couple of seconds down on each of the 2 previous stages and Kevin said everything was fine and he had no big problems.

Mike Quinn was the fastest modified car so far today but Mike and his co driver Grainne have had their problems. Their Escort ran out of brakes towards the end of stage 3 and on stage 2 the throttle cable broke but they were able to jam it open somehow and get the engine revving. Welsh driver Thomas Davies was blocked on stage 1 but then had a good run through stage 2 but his tyres went off on stage 3. Eddie Power in the Corolla WRC is running in class 15 and reckons he is going to have to tidy his act up. His total is now 26.04. Following a good time on the first stage considering that he hasn’t been here before young Dave Weston lost his momentum a bit on stage 2. His total after stage 3 is 25.31. Kevin Kelleher struggled through stage 2 and 3 with front wheel drive only on his Lancer following a hole appearing in his Lancer’s rear diff. He tried patching it with putty but that wasn’t much use really. Kevin’s total is 26.11. James Foley didn’t really get a recce done and he struggled with a couple of overshoots, but he’s not so far away on a total of 25.40. No sign here yet of Daragh O’Riordan’s Clio. Marty McCormack in the Outdoor Services Citroen C2 Max had a major moment at the chicane in stage 3 but still had a decent time and his total is 25.46. Andrew Hockridge is on 25.49 in a similar Citroen.
