Keith Cronin and his co driver Greg Shinnors were fastest through stages 5 and 6, the Gap and Ballyneale. Niall Maguire was 2nd fastest quite a few seconds up on Patrick Elliott so that Niall is now the leading National championship contender. Kevin Barrett dropped over half a minute with a puncture on his Subaru in stage 6 but didn’t lose a place. When Keith Cronin came into service he reported that even although he was fastest through 5 and 6 his car didn’t feel quite right and was a bit unstable, possibly down to tyre choice as he had cut slick tyres on the front and intermediates on the back. Patrick Elliott was pretty down in the dumps and said little except for “wrong tyres”. Niall Maguire on the other hand was all smiles and he knew he had gone well over the 2 stages to get ahead of his c/ship rival.
Garry Jennings is trying to conserve his GpN position now and he said he is “short shifting everywhere”. Garry is the highest placed National GpN contender at the moment. Kevin Kelleher is starting to push hard and said stage 6 was his first proper one of the rally and that was despite a half spin. Following his earlier differential problems Kevin thought he was out of the GpN points race today but he has got ahead of Thomas Fitzmaurice and has been taking time out of Eamonn Daly. Fitzmaurice said the rear end of his Lancer feels like a bar of soap, all over the road. Eamonn Daly had a couple of overshoots on that last loop of stages and still isn’t fully into the groove. Daragh O’Riordan continues to lead cl.6 in his Clio although he seemed to be a fraction slow through stage 6 but could have lost a few seconds when he caught another car. Dave Weston is still struggling slightly to come to grips with his first experience of wet Irish roads and his total now is 53.01. Marty McCormack said he is getting it all together now and his total is 52.15. Andrew Hockridge in a similar Citroen C2 Max is 13s down and still pushing. Mark Nangle damaged the front of his GpN Impreza in stage 6 but lost little time and told us. “I knew I wasn’t going to get stopped so I took the soft option – into a field!” On the WRC Rally Poland has damaged the suspension of his Focus and Hirvonen leads Sordo with Henning Solberg 3rd and Petter Solberg 4th.
