On the long Newtown stage Keith Cronin lost the lead again to Mark Higgins, Keith 11s slower than Mark and reported a little bit of brake fade. On stage 18 it really went wrong for Keith as a front wheel puncture cost him over 1m.30s. Adam Gould crashed out of the rally on stage 17 on the fast section down past Garth and his Impreza went up the bank and on to its side. When the cars reached service Mark said. “The rain started just as we started the stage and it was slippier than ice. At 5mph there was still no grip. But the car is going well, there is a little looseness in the gearbox mounting but otherwise all OK”. Cronin’s co driver Greg Shinnors told us. “We don’t know where the got the puncture, it was maybe at the bale at the Round Table. We treated the stage with respect. Now Keith is winded by the whole thing. I think if he had the choice between the ferry and finishing he would take the ferry”. Alastair Fisher said he even spun his Lancer on that very slippy section of Cringle at about 10mph with the engine anti lag switched off. Alastair also reported fog plus steam coming off the road. His experienced co driver Rory Kennedy said. “That must be the slippiest road of any rally”. Steven Quine said. “It was like a bottle. We were sitting spinning all 4 wheels”. Marty McCormack continues to lead the Citroen Racing Trophy. He reported no problems. Jason Pritchard did take a few seconds from Marty on the long stage 17 but then dropped a few in 18 when his C2R2 developed 3rd gear trouble.

In the Trophy Rally after stage 16 Lee Batty in his Escort had a very narrow lead over George Collister (Lancer) with James Hoseason in his Darrian a further 4s back. Cork man Pat Maguire in his Subaru Legacy was in 13th place. Pat had all sorts of dramas before the start as the ferry was late and the car needed seat belts and various bits and pieces. Kevin Bradley crashed his Escort out in stage 15.

Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride led the pre 67 section of the Historics after stage 16. Their Porsche was almost 5m ahead of Gary Edington’s Hillman Imp. Stephen Higgins was 3rd in his Mini Cooper S. The Japanese crew of Shinobu Kitani/Makoto Mizoi were 4th in their Mini Cooper S. They shipped the Mini all the way from Japan, it took 8 weeks to get here! The consensus of opinion is that it is the cleanest nicest car in the rally!! David Stokes continues to lead the Post Historics but is now getting reeled in by Steve Smith in his Porsche. Smith found an air lock in the braking system and since that has been rectified he has picked up the pace somewhat. Derek Boyd/Roisin Boyd are 3rd in the Post Historics despite their Porsche developing a hole in the exhaust. In the Classic Rally Gwyndaf Evans has built up an almost 4m lead over Phil Collins in his Ascona with Mark Solloway pushing very hard to catch Collins. Darren Moon is 4th and Ian Corkill of 4Hire is 5th in his Escort RS1800. When Gwyndaf Evans stepped out of his Escort at service he said. “No dramas, just enjoying it”.
