Having led on the first stage Seamus O’Connell unfortunately put his Escort on its roof towards the end of stage 2. Driver and co driver were OK but that effectively spelt the end of Seamus’ rally. It is unlikely that he could have held off the hard charging Michael Barrable in any case. Michael stalled his Focus WRC at the start of the first stage but set brilliant times through stages 2 and 3 to hold a substantial lead here at service. Second on the road Mark Courtney blotted his copybook at a square left square right over mud in stage 2 where his Celica clipped a bank, and he also stalled the engine.

Neil McCance continues to lead the Evo Challenge contenders and has had a great run so far. Neil said however that even on what appeared to be a dry road it was still very slippy, and at one point under braking his Lancer slid on and up-ended a bale. Adrian Hetherington is determined to get his Escort to the end of the rally today having had several mishaps recently. Viv Hamill in 4th has set consistently fast times over the first 3 stages. Brian Brogan in 5th had a few problems with his intercom on the first stage but then had a good run through stages 2 and 3.

News of further retirements: Brian O’Mahony has parked his Clio at the start of stage 3. Richard Moffett has been forced to pull out when his rear wheel drive Peugeot broke either a differential or a drive shaft.

In the Citroen Racing Trophy Sam Moffett has led from the start from Barry Evans with series leader Adrian McElhinney 3rd. Martin Tynan has stopped at the start of stage 2, his Citroen suffering suspected broken drive shaft.

Further stories include: Trevor Mulligan slowed on stage 3 when he thought he had a puncture but it turned out to be a power steering problem with his Escort. Adrian Quinn has clutch difficulties with his Lancer. Alan Carmichael lost a few seconds stopping to check that Seamus O’Connell was OK. Michael Curran’s Escort was giving some flat shift gear change trouble. Stanley Ballantine had all sorts of handling difficulties with his Lancer until he re-set the differentials. Tomas O’Rourke had a puncture in his Civic at the end of stage 2, on the wee narrow section. He lost little time and then had a good cut through stage 3 to get back on course. Peter Wilson spun his Civic on the slippy section of stage 2. Martin Cunningham has had a couple of spins in his Civic.
