Rain on the final stage made the going very difficult for the drivers and the leaderboard took a bit of a hammering with Adrian Hetherington (Escort) and Neil McCance (Lancer) stopping with mechanical problems. Brian Brogan also stopped in his Escort while Stanley Ballantine and Willie Mavitty slid their Lancers off the road at junctions to make it a cliffhanger for 2nd place in the Evo Challenge. No doubt about the winner though, Michael Barrable and first in group N and the Evo Challenge, John McGlaughlin.

When Michael Barrable and his co driver Dermot O’Gorman brought their Focus WRC into the City North Hotel finish Michael said. “We shifted on to manual mode over the final stages and there were weird read-outs on the dash display, but otherwise the car went brilliantly. They were great stages today and fortunately I made a good call at the end, going for the right tyres for the wet conditions. The wipers were on a full lash. I’m just waiting on word now about my son Robert who was going well in his Fiesta, he was up to about 20th”. Second placed John McGlaughlin was on absolute flat out mode over the last few stages, his Lancer in and out of one hedge at least. McGlaughlin’s pace put maximum pressure on Neil McCance and there was only 11s between the two starting the last stage. We do not think that had any bearing McCance’s clutch blowing within sight of the finish.

On RallyNews No.5 we reported that Peter Wilson was highest placed Civic. Subsequently Damien McCarthy got 10s back from an earlier time so West Cork man Damien then became top placed Civic from Peter Wilson with Tomas O’Rourke 3rd. However, Peter Wilson/John Kilmurray pulled out after stage 7 as their Civic lost 3rd gear, which is probably the most important cog in the car for these type of stages. In the Citroen Racing Trophy Barry Evans led after stage 7 by 16s from Adrian McElhinney with Mark Kane 3rd a further 50s back. In the race for Evo Challenge honours Neil McCance fumbled the ball slightly in stage 7 when he spun his Lancer and John McGlaughlin closed to within 18s of Neil. Neil’s main time loss came from a spin in stage 7. On the penultimate stage McGlaughlin took back another few seconds to leave just 11s separating the two before the final stage. Times are still coming in but it would appear that Barry Evans/Alan Kane have finished highest placed Citroen C2R2 and there is no time as yet for Citroen Racing Trophy points leader Adrian McElhinney as his car sustained a last stage puncture. John McGlaughlin takes maximum Evo Challenge points which really opens up the Irish series. Interestingly Neil McCance hasn’t planned to do the Ulster as he is going on holiday. Finally for now our thanks to all who supported and helped with the RallyNews service. Our thanks to Dougie Hughes & Aidan Harper for distributing the RallyNews. Well done to CoC Noel Devlin, Dave & Dawn Popham and all the hardworking ALMC team for organising a great day’s rallying. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON www.rallynews.net
