Niall Maguire was fastest through stage 5 by 3s from Patrick Elliott and then on stage 6 Elliott was fastest and pulled the 3s back. The gap between the 2 leading cars is 17s with 2 stages remaining so Maguire will need to pull something special out of the bag if he is to reel Elliott in before the Clonmel finish. Patrick said that on the very fast section through stage 5 he had to lift when a couple of spectators foolishly ran across the road in front of him. Patrick also said “besides that we’re going as hard as we can”. Maguire for his part lost a few seconds on a square left corner on stage 6 when he was just a wee bit over enthusiastic. Kevin Barrett also had an overshoot in stage 6, all the top drivers said that the conditions remain very slippy.

In Group N Kevin Kelleher is really going for gold and is on a massive charge after Garry Jennings, just 4s between the two now. We reported earlier that Garry was having 1st gear trouble, now 2nd gear is starting to complain as well. Dave Weston Jnr is just a couple of seconds down on each stage on the flying Jennings and Kelleher but Weston is still very much on the pace in his Impreza despite his Subaru slithering into a ditch in stage 6.

Mike Quinn continues to lead the 2wd category although he didn’t have a great time through stage 6, his Escort fighting for grip all the way. Mike’s co driver Grainne McEnery told us. “The car was all over the place and then we had a big moment so backed off”. Arthur Kierans had been on a charge and was 2nd rear wheel drive but his Escort engine went on to 3 cylinders and he has pulled in. Matthew Wilson continues to set super times for a 1600 machine and he is going to consult with the M-Sport engineers here at service to see what further fine tweaks they can make to the car. Marty McCormack was trying to compare his Citroen’s times to the new Ford but Marty had to squeeze his C2 past James Travers’ stricken Clio in stage 5 and then on stage 6 Marty’s car broke a drive shaft. They were new shafts fitted for the Manx International a couple of weeks ago. Andrew Hockridge is still going well in his Citroen C2 and he is on a total of 45.52. Jim McKenna is on 45.53 in his Starlet. John Somers lost some time when the Celical slid into a ditch but he is still going on a total of 46.03. David Percy also lost time when his Escort Maxi slid into a ditch, he’s on 46.49. Andrew Bushe has retired his Saxo in stage 6 when the engine cried enough.
