As the minutes ticked away at service in control here at the Trading Post there was no sign of the Garry Jennings Lancer. The news was that Garry had bashed the front of the car on stage 5 and had managed to reach the start of stage 6 but was working at the car there, possibly trying to fix a leak in the radiator. Oops! There goes Jennings into service so he must have got the radiator fixed and will probably still be in the top 10 but will have dropped a couple of minutes. As it was Kevin Kelleher led the rally here after stage 6 but by the slenderest of margins from the tying Niall Maguire and Kevin Barrett. Kevin Barrett had a scorcher of a time on the first stage out of service with Garry Jennings 2nd fastest and then Kevin was fastest again through stage 5, Caherlisane. On stage 6 it was Niall Maguire’s time to set a fastest time but by just 1s from Barrett and Kelleher.

Clonakilty man Kevin Kelleher said when he came into service. “There’s no more left in it, that’s as hard as I can go”. At that Kevin flashed a wedding ring at us and said. “I got married last Saturday and sure that’s worth a second a mile, I’ve nothing more to lose!” Kevin Barrett commented. “That was a better run over that loop. I attacked from the word go”. Maguire told us that he was finding it hard to concentrate and his wrong tyre choice for the first loop of stages was a disaster, but it was coming better. Thomas Fitzmaurice is driving a very controlled rally to hold 4th. Trevor Bustard in 5th said he put more cuts in his tyres to dispel the water and had a good run. Mike Quinn said he is getting no grip at all. Mike Bird was another to get a change of tyre and his fortunes increased through the 2nd loop of stages. John Spain hasn’t done a rally in his Celica for 4 years and he’s struggling to get on the pace. Jim McKenna continues to sweat buckets and joked that the fuse was gone in the air-con of his Starlet. Thomas Cahill has power steering problems and slid off the road a couple of times in stage 3 but still holds his place in the top 10. Noel O’Donnell is going well in his Peugeot and leads cl.12. Adrian McElhinney is on a total of 52.55 and is bedding in his new Citroen C2R2 Max. Looking forward to next weekend Castle MC still has a few places for the unrestricted Mini stages Rally.
