RALLY NEWS No.4 - After SS6 - Saturday @ 16:20:13

RALLY NEWS NO.4 Irvinestown/Saturday 4.20

UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 6 BIG DOG
1st (86) Sean Devine/Tony McDaid (Impreza WRC) 27.27
2nd (7) Alastair Fisher/Barry McNulty (Lancer N) 28.01
3rd (8) Jonny Greer/Kirsty Riddick (Lancer N) 28.14
4th (5) Stevie Whitford/Jonny Hart (Lancer A) 28.21
5th (10) Enda McNulty/Ronan O'Kane (Lancer) 28.30
6th (44) Errol Clarke/Neil Doherty (Lancer) 28.46
7th (15) Frank Kelly/Liam Brennan (Escort) 28.51
8th (23) Brian McGillin/David Doherty (Corolla WRC) 28.54
The above times are from the first few cars only. We are still awaiting a time for Ryan Barrett in his Escort. Even though Ryan is running in the Historic section he would still be counted in the leaderboard and should be in the top 10. Derek McGarrity meanwhile is on a total of 29.01 and Kenny McKinstry on 30.43.

At the end of stage 6 Big Dog Keith Cronin in the OO Lancer reported that the stages were a lot cleaner for the 2nd run and a real dream to drive. It is unfair to make a comparison as Keith is doing an important OO role and needs to be cautious, but his times would equate to 2nd overall at that point.

Rally leader Sean Devine came to the end of that 6th stage and he too reported that the stages are now in beautiful condition although he also talked of a slide in stage 5 which cost a few seconds. Kenny McKinstry seems to have all his difficulties with the car sorted and he equalled Devine’s time in stage 5 and was 1s down in stage 6. Still, however, Kenny has a lot of time to make up if he wants to get into a strong points scoring position. Derek McGarrity is in much the same boat. He has had the heater box removed from the Corolla and taped off the air outlets on the dash to stop the screen from misting up. Stage 6 was the first one where Derek was able to concentrate on driving the car hard although he was 3s down on McKinstry.

Brian McGillin had a good run through stages 5 and 6 the misfire in his Corolla WRC now cured and although he still has some difficulty with the sequential gear shift he was equal fastest through 5, just 2s off fastest in 6. Alastair Fisher was fastest GpN and he reported a lot more grip. Errol Clarke stiffened the rear of his Lancer and felt the car was handling a lot better. Frank Kelly was trying very hard through the 2 stages and set a time of 3.02 through stage 5 where Trevor Moore did 3.05 and Adrian Hetherington 3.06. Trevor Moore clipped the rear of his Escort when a gatepost stepped out in front of him but he seemed to lose little time. On Rally Asturias in Spain Kris Meeke has finished 2nd o/a behind Kopecky. Kris and his Peugeot team maintaining their lead in the IRC although only by 1 point.
