Through stage 4, Licken Lake, Niall Maguire and his co driver Enda Sherry really stamped their authority on this Clare Stages Rally, their Subaru covering the 13.8km in just 7m8s. Second placed Anthony O’Halloran seemed quite shaken at stage finish, the crumpled front left mudguard of his Lancer testimony to a collision of one of the straw bale chicanes and indicative of just how hard Anthony is trying on this his home Rally. In fact it was Mike Quinn who was 2nd fastest in the stage with a time of 7.19 and Anthony had 7.21. Maguire reported that the Subaru was handling well and all was well. Mike Quinn told us his tyres were getting plenty of grip now and he seemed a lot happier.

Brian Brogan got the finger out through stage 4 and moved from 6th to 4th. Trevor Bustard slipped from 5th to 6th, Trevor struggling a little with his Lancer’s new gearbox. When Craig Breen finished the Licken stage the front Pirelli tyres on his Fiesta R2 were roasting hot, proof if any was needed, that Craig is working the little car hard. The one thing he did say was that his 1600cc machine was perhaps running out of top speed on the very fast stage.

Aidan Walsh & Jim Casey should have been along behind Breen’s Fiesta but Aidan’s Escort was running a bit late and when he eventually appeared the car was on 3 cylinders. Aidan and Jim checked under the bonnet after the stage stop but couldn’t see exactly what the trouble was, and they have since pulled out of the rally in order to save the engine. Ed O’Callaghan also pulled up after the stage stop and co driver Ger Clancy jumped out to have a quick look under the bonnet and yelled over his shoulder. “Fuel starvation must have lost 10s”. John Reddington finished the stage with his front passenger side mudguard crumpled. It looked like he had clipped the same bale as Anthony O’Halloran. PJ Bonner had his engine exhaust manifold fixed and he seemed a lot happier. PJ and Reddington had exactly the same total time after that 4th stage, 32.40. Tom Flaherty was on a total of 31.36 and Pat Kelly, his Subaru well recovered from its Galway Summer Rally accident a few weeks ago, is on a total now of 31.24 just outside the top 10.
