BREAKING NEWS: Kevin Barrett’s Subaru gearbox has gone completely in stage 2. Out of rally. Also just got text from Ivan Fisher to say that Garry Jennings was running late but seemed to be going OK in stage 2. fs

The first stage of this Donegal Harvest Rally was always expected to be difficult and so it proved with No.4 seed PJ McDermott crashing his Subaru off the road and initial rally leader Kevin Barrett reporting gearbox woes with his Subaru. Current National Champion Patrick Elliott was first on the road in his Subaru and when the silver machine stopped at stage finish Patrick said. “Very difficult stage and my confidence was bad.” Niall Maguire was next in and judging by the look of Niall it would appear that he had been trying very hard as beads of sweat were running down inside his crash helmet. However Niall’s time was just a little slow and he said. “I was far too cautious!”.

Kevin Barrett looked to be really on a charge but the Triton Showers man reported the gearbox of his Subaru to be really playing up and he had been having trouble finding the gears. Seamus Leonard was also having gearbox problems with his Subaru. PJ McDermott has reportedly put his Subaru into the bog 2 junctions before the end of the stage on a 6 left corner.

Kevin Kelleher and Garry Jennings are having a huge battle for GpN honours on the National C/ship but Kevin definitely lost a fair bit of time on that opening stage through a dubious tyre choice. Garry Jennings felt that he was driving conservatively but it was a brilliant time. Camillus Bradley is suffering from a real bad flu but his co driver Danny O’Neill said they kept it tidy enough and certainly set a good time, equal to Manus Kelly in the race for best Escort. Declan Boyle however stole a march on both of them with a superb time.

Conor Harvey in his Civic was slowed through the stage when he caught up with John O’Donnell’s struggling Escort. Pat Kirk had a good run to record 11.17. Alastair Cochrane had a couple of minor spins and his time was 11.50. Damien Gallagher running at 12 in his Escort set a time of 11.27 and was hampered a little by a misting up screen.
