Garry Jennings was still being shown as 92nd o/a in the results after stage 3 following his big delay in stage 2. Garry and his co driver David Moynihan told us they stopped after the Kevin Barrett incident on stage 2 and contacted HQ. As it transpires Kevin told us that he didn’t have an accident. His Subaru stopped with a seized gearbox and they had to manoeuvre the car back off the bridge and up a drive to clear the road. The only driver significantly delayed was Seamus Leonard, with Kevin Kelleher slowing and losing a couple of seconds. Garry Jennings passed by, didn’t see the OK board although Kevin maintains it was up, and then Garry stopped to report what he thought was an accident.

Meanwhile in stage 4 Niall Maguire really upped his pace and completed the very tricky 16.4km stage in 10m33s. Fair enough, the roads are drying, but it was still a huge effort from Niall, 35s faster than his first run through this morning. Patrick Elliott recorded a 10.47 so dropped 14s in that one stage. Kevin Kelleher was another to have a stunning time in the stage, exactly equal to Maguire’s time. The most amazing time of all though belongs to Garry Jennings who was actually fastest on 10.31.

Declan Boyle dropped a few seconds and moved from 4th to 5th. Danny McBride is now shown as 2nd GpN and 11th o/a a couple of places up on Pat Kirk. Class leaders after stage 4 included: Russell Woods in his Escort who was leading cl.13 from James Brown, but we are hearing reports that Russell has not come out of Stage 5. Russell was the fastest cl.13 driver through stage 3 registered for the Border and would have got the Border C/ship Drive of the Day Award, but he has to finish the rally to get it. Noel O’Donnell/Ronan Murran are having a great run to lead cl.12 and they are very much in the hunt for the HASS Border C/ship top award. Conor Harvey made a middling enough start to the rally but he had a brilliant run through stage 4 to lead cl.7 and move into the top 20. Paul Gallagher led cl.11 after SS3 and Liam McMullan led cl.2.

Finally for now the last word goes to the famous black Respa Beds Escort of Connie Smith which is acting as course car today and had Kevin Lynch’s son Martin co-driving. This is all part of the Paul Gallagher fund-raising effort and KPL paid a lot of euro for the privilege today.
