Through stages 2 and 3 Denis Cronin has set fastest times to move into the lead by 1s from Melvyn Evans. The two actually tied for the lead after stage 2. Denis said here at Skibbereen service. “If only I had the confidence that I had 7 or 8 years ago, but the car is working well”. Melvyn Evans commented. “I feel a bit rusty”. Kevin Barrett told us. “There were a couple of 4 lefts in that 3rd stage fairly put the manners into me!”

In the race for the Dunlop C/ship the ball is still very much in reigning champion Patrick Elliott’s court and he told us. “I’m going nicely but finding it difficult to judge the pace and the grip levels. The car doesn’t feel nice to drive”. Niall Maguire said. “That was a tricky stage that Mount Kidd. I could be going harder in places it is a matter of hanging in there”.

In Group N Garry Jennings is 8s ahead of Kevin Kelleher in the race for the Patterson’s RallyNews Award. Garry said. “I’m still not enjoying the stages. It is so slippy in some places and there is grip in others. At least we have found the broken lead to the starter now”. Kevin Kelleher remarked. “I’ve no confidence in the car. It is still moving about. We will get it checked here at service”.

Mike Quinn in his Mk2 Escort now leads the Modified category following Barry Meade’s stage 3 accident. Mike told us that he is having to live with the bent brake disc on his Escort and also the paddle gear change wants to move into neutral all the time. Barry Meade and his co driver Alan White are reportedly OK following their stage 3 accident. Vincent O’Shea in his Escort Cosworth and several other drivers stopped to make sure Barry and Alan were unhurt. John Buttimer has had problems with his Subaru centre differential switch and is losing time. Jim McKenna’s rear wheel drive Starlet has stopped in stage 3 which means that Galway man Neil Pierce will almost certainly have clinched his class in the Dunlop series. Brian O’Keefe in the blue Subaru is having intercom problems and is wife Carol is lowing her voice shouting the notes.
