With just 1 stage remaining on this Fastnet Rally Denis Cronin’s lead over the tying Niall Maguire and Melvyn Evans is 21s. In Dunlop C/ship terms Patrick Elliott in 4th place is on course to retain his title but having said that Patrick fluffed a hairpin right junction in stage 6 and dropped nearly 20s. Anything could still happen, but realistically Kevin Barrett and Garry Jennings will both have to get ahead of Elliott for Niall Maguire to win the title. Elliott commented. “I am taking no risks and driving to keep it on the road.” Niall Maguire winced when he brought his Subaru to a halt at the service control and said. “I hurt my back real bad on the first stage. Besides that I can’t do much more as regards the championship”. Denis Cronin dropped a couple of seconds to Melvyn Evans on that stage 6 and Denis said that he was “minding” his tyres, that he had picked a fairly soft compound. Melvyn Evans’ charge for the lead took a dent on stage 5 when his Subaru suffered a real wheel puncture and he dropped 14s to Cronin on that one stage.

Kevin Barrett reckoned he picked too hard a compound tyre for the afternoon loop of stages and although the roads were drying rapidly they were still greasy. Garry Jennings continues to lead group N and he was a bit happier this afternoon as the roads dried. Second in GpN but heading for the Group N National title and the Patterson RallyNews Award, Kevin Kelleher said. “I’m minding it, one more stage to go. I’m a long time working for this”.

Daragh O’Riordan continues to lead class 6 and is the highest placed front wheel drive contender. Mike Quinn is just 1s ahead of Wesley Patterson in the race for rear wheel drive honours. These times are of course unofficial. Quinn said at service. “This warped brake disc is killing me”. Wesley Patterson commented. “I had softer tyres on the rear of the Escort and it was better and I’m getting used to this Play Station paddle gear change. Thomas Fitzmaurice is just outside the leaderboard on a total of 1.06.53 and said he is still “tipping away”. William Cavanagh is battling to hold on to his class lead, his Escort’s gear lever snapped off down near the bottom and he has wedged a screwdriver in to try and change gear. Declan Gallagher is still leading cl.11 in his Starlet ahead of Neil Pierce, but Neil in his Honda is on course to win his class in the Dunlop series. Michael Delaney & Liam Brennan have retired their Escort in stage 4 with a broken drive shaft. Crag Breen has won the International Fiesta series on the Rally GB this afternoon which is pretty stunning for the young Kilkenny man. Craig has won the Irish National Junior C/ship, the Irish Fiestas, the UK Fiestas, the European Fiestas and now the World Fiestas. Not bad for a teenager!!
