Cold damp road conditions greeted the drivers as they tackled the first stage, Kerry Head. At least there was no standing water left following Friday’s huge rainfall.

Keith Cronin and his guest co driver Derry O’Brien were first on the road and Keith reported a spin at the first junction but otherwise a clear run. Mike Quinn was next up and when his Escort came to a halt at stage finish he described it as “awfully slippy”. Thomas Fitzmaurice was fastest, the TLI man running a bigger restricter on his Lancer which means that the car is in Cl.8 and not running Group N. Thomas said. “The chicanes came up quick. It is very slippy”. Ed Synan reported no problems. Sean Flanagan told of the temperature gauge creeping up on his GpN Subaru.

Ed O’Callaghan started at No.8 but there was no sign of him at stage finish and we hear that his Escort is parked after a collision with a straw bale chicane. Tim Enright had brake problems with his Lancer and his time was 9.40. Tadgh Linehan has his son Terry co driving for the first time and they were just outside the above leaderboard on 9.31. Peter Howley had 2 spins and his Starlet stopped the clock on 9.40.

Gary Reidy burst the side window of his hired Lancer in a collision with a chicane which must have given his co drive, Motorsport News man Sean Moriarty, quite a shock!

News has come in of an accident at Junction 5 on the first stage which has caused a blockage.
