Mike Quinn and his co driver Grainne McEnery were fastest through stage 2 while James Stafford/Frank Dwyer in the Darrian were just 1s slower and move into the overall lead. Keith Cronin was a further second down on Stafford while early leader Thomas Fitzmaurice stalled his Lancer at the start of stage 2 and dropped a handful of seconds which was enough to move him back into 3rd o/a. Stafford reported no problems at stage finish. Mike Quinn is still having a few worries about his Escort brakes sticking on.

Keith Cronin said that his Lancer seemed to lose power after a series of jumps. Vincent O’Shea had a bit of a worry at stage start when his Escort Cosworth refused to fire but then it came good. Sean Flanagan is keeping a wary eye on his Subaru temperature gauge and trying to save the engine as best he can, but still setting some nice times.

Pat Kelly has had a good run through stage 2 but he found the first stage a bit difficult as it was so slippery. Alan O’Callaghan commented. “Its fair hairy out there”. Tim Enright is still having problems with his Lancer’s brakes. Peter Howley may retire his Starlet here at service after colliding with the straw bales in stage 2. Reports on the accident on stage 1 would indicate that there are no injuries.

Barry Evans/David Lyons in the Citroen C2R2 are the top class 6 crew so far. Barry Ryan/John Young had a great time through stage 2. They didn’t get doing stage 1 because of the blockage and their time now is 15.24 and they now lead cl.11. Eamonn Hanley/Padraig Doody also had a fine drive through 2 and they are now 11th o/a and 2nd in Cl.14. John Hickey in the Legacy will not be continuing in the 2nd half of the rally. On the Roger Albert Clark Rally Gwyndaf Evans leads by almost 2m from Jeremy Easson with Steve Bannister 3rd – all in Escorts. Frank Cunningham is 12th in his RS1800. Marty McCormack has retired his Escort with engine problems.
