It was a great win here today in Kenmare in the Historic part of the rally for Ray & Elaine Cunningham in their Mini Cooper S. Ray commented at Kenmare Square finish ramp. “An excellent rally, tough stages. Lots of people said they didn’t like the stages. In fairness, although I thought they were tricky they were good and suited the Mini. I am delighted to get the win again and Phillip Wylie in the MGB pushed hard”. Phillip Wylie said. “Challenging stages, very enjoyable. There was a big kick jump at the end of the final stage which nearly caught us out but it was a good day”. Mervyn Johnston said. “I didn’t expect to do any better than this. It was very enjoyable towards the end”. In the Post Historic section Yorkshireman Sean Lockyear in his Porsche led by just 1s going into the final stage. Through that Inchimore stage Lockyear fairly threw the Porsche down the road and arrived at one chicane so fast he dented a door and a wheel against the bales. It paid off and he beat Denis Moynihan by 10s at the finish. Moynihan said. “That last stage had been resurfaced and we didn’t get the grip and the traction we got earlier. However the rally was a great credit to the organisers”. Denis and his co driver Dan Moynihan have won the Historic section of the Thomond Crystal Southern 4 championship as the only crew that could beat them, Ray Hilliard/Senan Raggett finished 3rd today in the Post Historics, 57s back.
Finally for now our thanks and congratulations to Kevin Flannery, Gary McCormack, Cathy Healy and all from Killarney & District MC for putting on such a splendid event here in Kenmare. Our thanks also to all who assisted and supported the RallyNews service and thanks as well to Dougie Hughes. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON www.rallynews.net
