The onset of rain at stage 6 caused a real difficulty for the drivers as the roads almost instantly got as slippy as ice and several of the top drivers failed to finish the stage. Aaron MacHale/Diarmuid Falvey did get to stage finish and set a reasonably good time but then their Focus WRC refused to fire up after the passage control and there is no sign of the crew here at service as yet. On our last RallyNews we mentioned that Daniel McKenna was the quickest class 14 driver through stage 4 which would have put him in line for the special HASS Border C/ship award. That has gone up in the air now with the news that Daniel’s Escort has collided with a bale and appears to be out of the rally. Manus Kelly’s Escort has slid into a ditch in that stage and there is no sign of it yet here at service.
Out at the front of the rally Kevin Barrett set a fabulous time through stage 6 to move within 1s of leader Melvyn Evans. Melvyn stalled his Subaru on the start line of stage 5 and then lost a little time with the rain in stage 6. Craig Breen has put in some solid time through this middle loop of stages but his S2000 machine is looking rather the worse for wear with dents and bashes all down one side evidence of a trip into the Mayo scenery. Craig told us. “It went off the road after a jump in stage 6. I’m pushing fairly hard and I’m not far away but the stages just don’t seem to be suiting the car all that well. I think as well I was on slightly too hard a compound tyre for the damp conditions”.
Declan Boyle has a good run over the last few stages to be top placed Escort just ahead of Damien Gallagher and Camillus Bradley. Damien Gallagher had earlier brake problems. This is cured but there is a strange rubbing noise from the back of the Escort. Camillus Bradley was slightly hesitant early in the rally but he has got on the pace over the last couple of stages and is now 3rd in class 14. Sean Flanagan continues to lead the “conventional” group N machinery and he has the misfire cured on his Subaru. Trevor Bustard had put a few little cuts in his tyres to try and get some heat into them and he was glad of that through stage 6 and holds 2nd in the conventional GpN category. Craig Breen the top placed GpN/Cl.4 car. Eugene Ferry has recovered from a first stage excursion into a ditch to bring his Escort up to 11th o/a and set a good time through 6 in the rain.
