When Welshman Melvyn Evans and his co driver Patrick Walsh brought their Subaru in here to the finish ramp at the McWilliam Park Hotel as winners of this Mayo Stages Rally it makes it their 2nd victory of this year’s National Championship. Melvyn said at the finish. “I made hard work of it but we lost at the rugby yesterday so we had to win something!” When asked if he would continue with the championship he confirmed that he would certainly be going to the next round, the Circuit of Kerry. It was the Woodstock stage where Melvyn always seemed to pull out the stops and when asked about it he said: “It is fast and flowing and we knew that was the place where we could make time”. Kevin Barrett made a real charge for the lead but then lost out to Evans on stage 7, the Woodstock test, and Kevin said afterwards. “I did nothing wrong, just couldn’t match him in there”. Craig Breen who was 3rd in his Super 2000 machine said. “I’m probably lucky to be here after the big moment earlier on. It wasn’t our day. There were lots of junctions and the car hadn’t the legs of the WRC machines. I’m not taking it away from the boys in front, they were on a good pace”.

Craig has won the GpN category in his new breed of rally car. Sean Flanagan was the highest placed of the normal production cars in his Subaru with Trevor Bustard taking the next place in his Lancer. Declan & Brian Boyle had a brilliant run in their Escort to win the Modified category. Lettermacward man Declan said. “This is one of my best results. I tried to keep it steady towards the end. I stalled on one stage earlier and also had a spin”. Second Modified finisher Daniel Gallagher said. “I would have settled for that result this morning alright. We had the brake problems and then a massive vibration through the car for a couple of stages that turned out to be a balance weight had fallen off the new drive shaft. My co driver Paul Garry’s backside was getting numb on the seat from the vibrations!”

Looking ahead to both the Midland and Circuit of Ireland events, Clerk of the Course of the Midland, Sean Cahill (087 9334870) and Bobby Willis, Event Director for the Circuit, have told us that entries for both events will be accepted until the end of this coming week.

Finally for now our thanks to all who supported and helped with the RallyNews service. RallyNews will be from the West Cork Rally next weekend.
