RALLY NEWS No.4 - After Stage 3 - Saturday @ 13:58:24

RALLY NEWS NO.4 Service/Welshpool/Saturday

UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 3 Myherin 2
1st (1) Keith Cronin/Barry McNulty (Impreza N) 49.01.2
2nd (37) Adam Gould/Craig Drew (Impreza N) 50.18.3
3rd (3) Jonny Greer/Dai Roberts (Lancer N) 50.55.8
4th (7) Alastair Fisher/Rory Kennedy (Lancer N) 51.23.0
5th (4) David Bogie/Kevin Rae (Lancer N) 51.41.8
6th (6) Dave Weston Jnr/Ieuan Thomas (Impreza N) 51.50.7

On the 2nd visit to the Myherin stage conditions were absolutely beautiful in the Welsh forests and Alastair Fisher was fastest through the long stage by 6s from Dave Weston with Keith Cronin 3rd quickest.

The leaderboard above may be subject to a slight amendment as both Alastair Fisher and Dave Weston have incurred major road penalties due to traffic delays in Newtown. There is a fair possibility that the penalties will be removed eventually which would leave Alastair 2nd overall and Dave Weston Jnr 3rd. Further times coming in show all sorts of road penalties for virtually every crew which would make a correction seem ever more likely.

Since our last Rally News it has been confirmed that Gwyndaf Evans/Chris Patterson and Craig Breen/Gareth Roberts are officially retired. Gwyndaf did not get a good run at all, having only 3rd and 4th gears for both stages. Breen’s stoppage was down to a problem with the fuel line.

Mark Donnelly/Paddy Robinson in their Citroen C2R2 Max continue to lead Class R2. Mark’s engineer Robbie McGurk replaced the throttle body on the Citroen at last service to cure an irregularity. Matti Rantanen has had some work done to the rear brakes of his Twingo and he is 2nd in R2 with Robert Barrable 3rd. Scottish driver John MacCrone lost 10m in stage 2 when his Fiesta incurred a front wheel puncture. David Harrison had some problems with the hydraulic clutch in his Swift but set a decent time in stage 2. Richard Sykes got his priorities right on the long road section from stage 2 to service when he steered his Swift into a McDonald’s drive through for a carry out breakfast!

In the Historic Rally Dessie Nutt’s Porsche lost a few seconds with a puncture to allow Jonathan Gale into the lead in his Tiger with Paul Mankin 2nd in his Lotus Cortina and Dessie has slipped from leading to 3rd. In the Post Historic section Jeremy Easson/Alun Cook lead from Andrew Haddon/Mark Crisp, both in Escorts. David Stokes has retired his Escort with engine problems. In the Classic section Nick Elliott is leading from Julian Reynolds, both in Escorts. Richard Hill is 3rd in his Escort and Phil Collins is 4th in his Opel Ascona. Phil’s co driver Derek Brannigan told us that they are having a ball through the forests in the big Ascona and their only slight worry is a vibration through the floor at high speed.

Julian Wilkes in his Nova with Will Rutherford co driving, led the Challenge Rally after their opening stage, Sweet Lamb. Callum Black/Paul Wakely were 2nd despite knocking the tracking of their MGZR awry in the stage. Jonathan Cunningham/Richard Millener were 3rd in their Fiesta.
