No.1 seed Melvyn Evans was very disappointed when he reached the end of stage 4 to report that the pipe had come loose on his Subaru turbo charger again. On stage 3 Melvyn lost well over a minute because of the pipe coming loose. It was fixed at service but something must be not quite right when it came loose again. Melvyn was 6th at the end of stage 4 but decided then to pull out of the rally before there was any engine damage. Derek McGarrity was fastest through stage 4 and he joked at stage finish. “We have pulled the choke out!”

Rally leader Kevin Barrett was 1s slower than his first run through that Desmond’s Grave stage and McGarrity has now closed to within 2s of the lead. Kevin commented. “I was trying to keep it clean and tidy and I think there was more gravel on the stage than first time over”. Niall Maguire made a great improvement 2nd time over the stage to set a 2nd fastest time.

Kevin Kelleher was lying 4th o/a leaving service but Kevin has reportedly pulled out of the rally on the road section because of overheating worries with his Lancer. This leaves Alan Ring leading group N and he had a good run through the stage. Barry Meade is the best of the Escorts at the moment and was fastest Escort through stage 4 and following some hair raising exploits early on Barry said. “Everything is back on track”. Declan Boyle is lying 2nd in that class 14, the Donegal man 5s down on Meade through the stage. Mike Quinn is listed as being well down the order following his stage 3 accident but he is still running with the top cars although his time was 8s slower than Declan Boyle’s through stage 4. Mike reported his Escort brakes to be fading, the fluid boiling in this heat. Mark Jasper in the Accent WRC still has power steering problems although he set a reasonable time through stage 4. John O’Donnell was lying 16th o/a after stage 3 but we hear reports that his Escort has suffered a puncture in stage 4. Paul Purtill has come through strongly to hold 7th o/a and lead cl.13 in his Escort from the similar Escort of Ed Synan.

Alan Ring leads group N in his Lancer from Paul Ahearn in an Impreza. Lloyd Hutchinson leads class 9 in his Mini Cooper. Eamonn Daly would appear to have withdrawn his Lancer following service. Eamonn was into the top 10. Jakes Kelly is Ooing in one of Christy Carey’s Subarus and a chicane bale seems to have jumped out in front of the car and damaged a front mudguard! Mike Moriarty who is co driving for Mike O’Leary in the new BMW M3 Compact joked at the end of stage 4. “We could win this race yet!”

It is wonderful what you have to do. Suzanne Raggett who is marred to CoC Senan, is a specialist florist, Kerry Wedding Flowers, and she offered to make the winner’s garlands for the rally. The necessary foliage did not arrive yesterday so Suzanne, who had been helping in the rally office, took off up a nearby mountain, gathered the laurel leaves, and made the garlands last night!
