Tim McNulty and his co driver Paul Kiely piled on the pressure on the last few stages to win the rally by 15s. For Tim and Paul it is great to win here in Cavan. Tim won his first class award here on the Cavan Rally many years ago in a Nova. However, today what is more important for Tim is that this is a great warm up for the Donegal International and a real good test of his Subaru. Derek McGarrity was fastest on the last stage but he had to make up his mind whether to make a charge over the entire last loop or go for maximum points in the Dunlo0p C/ship. The points are more important to Derek at this time.

Niall Maguire and Melvyn Evans finished the rally on equal time for 3rd place and Niall gets the podium place on the tie break ruling. Daniel McKenna had a brilliant run throughout the day and was able to take it steady through the final few stages to win the 2 wheel drive category from Declan Boyle. Rodney Wilton was making a charge on the last loop but put his Escort on its side for 4m in stage 8. This also held up Sam Moffett for a few seconds. Samuel Kelso had a very good run to bring his Escort into 10th o/a and win class 13.

Garry Jennings survived 3 punctures on his lancer through the last couple of stages to win group N. Garry is indebted to young Sam Moffett who lent him his spare wheel.

In Dunlop National Rally Championship terms Tim McNulty is not registered so Niall Maguire continues to lead the championship with 80 points. Derek McGarrity has 76 points and Melvyn Evans is 3rd on 72. Lloyd Hutchinson and his co driver Kevin Flanagan seemed to be on course in their Mini to get the HASS Drive of the Day Award. However Lloyd’s Mini does not seem to have made the finish so that special award goes to car 122 Ambrose Gallaghan/Derek Molloy in their Corolla for the best Border C/ship class 9 contender through stage 4. The Dunlop Driver of the Day is Car No.42 Neil Pierce in his Civic.

Adrian Hetherington’s Escort was up as high as 8th o/a but mechanical gremlins intervened on the last 2 stages and his green Escort had to be pulled over. Shane McGirr/Stephen O’Hanlon retired their Starlet with engine problems.

Finally for now our thanks to CoC Alan Cullinan and Alex Coleman as well as the hard working Cavan MC team who put on such a good event today. Many thanks as well to everyone who supported our RallyNews service including Dougie Hughes.
