Kevin Barrett made a really determined charge through the opening stage to set equal fastest time with Melvyn Evans. Evans reckoned that he was lucky to get away without a puncture having clipped a stone mid stage. When Derek McGarrity brought his Subaru into stage finish he was quickly out of the car to check the front wheels and tyres as he also had clipped a stone. Niall Maguire reported a good clean run, a few slippy patches but OK. Daragh O’Riordan told us that he was only really here as a good warm up for the Donegal Rally, and he felt he was getting little grip through the stage and it affected his confidence.
Mark Sheahan in the Mr Binman Citroen C2R2 Max had a good run to lead class 6. Kieran Daly is 2nd in that class in his Senator Engineering Citroen C2R2 Max but quite a few seconds down. Mike Quinn was the fastest of the Mk2 Escorts despite his rear brakes locking up. Declan Boyle lost a massive amount of time in the stage when he put his Escort off the road and he said he had made a wrong tyre choice. Paul Purtill was 2nd in class 13 in his Escort. James Murphy was 14th o/a after stage 1, his co driver Anthony Nestor said they lost at least 15s with a stall. John McQuaid was 11th o/a after that opening stage and 2nd in cl.14. John and his co driver Seamus O’Connor said that there was a vibration coming from the rear of their Escort.
Anthony O’Halloran lost a lot of time with a front right puncture on his Lancer and Sean Flanagan’s Group N Impreza was stopped for approximately 3m while Sean changed a punctured tyre.
