Conditions on stage 3 of this ALMC Rally were damp but didn’t seem to cause the drivers too much of a problem. Damian Cole in his Focus WRC was fastest with David Kynaston 2nd fastest, Simon Mauger 3rd equal with Mark Courtney. Rally Leader Michael Barrable lost quite a few seconds as the misfire returned to his Focus WRC with somewhat of a vengeance. Michael told us here at service. “The car was fine for the first half of the stage and then maybe on a square corner the misfire returns and it is like the car is on 3 cylinders”. Damian Cole told us. “We were a bit tame on the first stage but it was quite good through stages 2 and 3”. Simon Mauger in his Mk2 Escort said. “Its very slippy. Hard to get traction with the 2 wheel drive”.

Neil McCance continues to lead GpN and the Evo Challenge contenders. He said. “Overall it is 100 per cent although on the 2nd stage I was over-driving the car and making silly mistakes at junctions. That 2nd stage really suits the Evo. In stage 3 there is a lot of square corners which is not so good for us”. David Kynaston in the Audi A3 Quattro was only 9th after stage 1 but has moved up to a strong 5th and said. “I got a bit more confidence and also we slackened off the suspension which was too tight”. Michael O’Brien is having some problems with his Focus gear change. Also the launch control system is not working properly, and the car is pushing the nose on tight corners.

There is no sign as yet here at service of John Stone’s Skoda Fabia which was at number 5 nor Mark Jasper’s Metro 6R4. Declan McNaughton still has a small problem with his Escort’s gear change read out, otherwise OK. Kenny McKinstry is well down the order as he tries to sort out the McNamara Escort and Kenny said here at service. “It’s a wee bit better. We changed the rear suspension which helped. But the tyres were not right for 2 of the stages.”

We asked Kenny what the car was like in overall terms and he gave a little smile and said. “She’d get a sweat up in ye!” Maurice Moffett said. “I just can’t read the conditions today, not making progress at all”. Mark Courtney had a great run through stage with his Celica and had a broad smile on at service In control when he told us. “That’s my home stage. I had to go hard in there. I know it like the back of my hand”. Trevor Mulligan spun his Escort in stage 2 but is happy enough. Brendan Cumiskey told us that he is having a little struggle getting used to his Lancer which has been rebuilt, and the rear diff is too tight, making the car tail happy.
