This Lurgan Park Rally, again sponsored by Orchard Motorsport, is very tight at the top with just a handful of seconds covering the first 5 cars. Fastest through the first stage was Derek McGarrity in his Subaru while Kenny McKinstry in his older model Impreza reported a problem with his intercom system for most of the stage, which could account for being .3 of a second down on McGarrity. Eleven times Lurgan Park winner McKinstry knows that every stage is vital here in the Park, so he’s not too happy about getting off on the wrong foot.
Derek McGarrity told us. “I was a bit messy on the first half of the stage over the gravel. A bit untidy, but then we were perfect on the tarmac.” Darren Gass was another who admitted to being slow over the gravel section, but also said he was still getting the feel of the car. Eugene Donnelly spun his Corolla in the centre of the park and also said that he felt very rusty and was being careful on the loose. Eugene also said that he was pleased to have lost so little time with the spin. The Tarmac Champion is certainly still in the hunt.
Garry Jennings was happy enough with his run but admitted to being very nervous and short shifting too much at the start. Mark Doyle in the Celica clipped a barrier too close and has damaged the steering on the Toyota. Mark is not even sure if he will be able to keep going. Gary White in his beautiful Group A Subaru Impreza had a time of 2.17.3 and lost a few seconds when the side of the car touched a barrier.
John McGaffin admitted to having a disastrous stage with spins and overshoots and his time was over 3 minutes. Kieron Graffin broke a drive shaft in his GpN Impreza at the hairpin. Mark Massey switched to an Impreza and leads GpN from Cashel man Pat O’Connell. Wesley Patterson was the fastest of the Mk2 Escorts despite trying to start the stage with the car not in gear!
