Darren Gass certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons when he set a scorching time through stage 5, his Subaru stopping the clock on 1m.49.8s. Kenny McKinstry was half a second slower. Eugene Donnelly was .3 of a second slower than Kenny and Derek McGarrity was 2s back following an overshoot. Darren Gass has set some brilliant times today but also a couple that weren’t so good. There is a twist however to his stage 5 time as his Subaru went away wide towards the finish of the stage and Darren cut back across the grass. To get back on to the track Darren took the shortest line and may have gone inside a bale instead of outside it, but this is unconfirmed. Kenny McKinstry was once again first on the road and he told us that he had a very good clean run but the stage was very slippy in patches even though the tarmac bits were dry. Eugene Donnelly also said he had a good run and he was obviously a little disappointed to be a split second slower than McKinstry.
Derek McGarrity confirmed that he had stalled his Subaru at a square tight corner from the tarmac on to the gravel. Brian O’Mahony said about the new format stages this afternoon. “I’ve more to learn.” Ray Brammer admitted to making a real mess of the stage when he missed a turn, had an overshoot and dropped at least a dozen seconds. Sligo Pallets man Andrew Mullen also had a big slide of a part overshoot but lost little time and is 18th o/a. Kieron Graffin was fastest GpN but Pat O’Connell still leads the category. Wesley Patterson once again was fastest Mk2 Escort and leads class 2. Brian O’Mahony in his Metro leads cl.3. Dessie McCartney in his Porsche leads cl.5 which is the Historic section. Gary Owens is 2nd in his Escort and Stephen Mawhinney 3rd in the ex works Russell Brookes Sunbeam Lotus.
On World Championship Rally Finland after stage 18 (penultimate stage) Latvala in the Focus leads from Ogier who is plus 11s. Loeb has come into 3rd and he is plus 15s. Solberg and Chris Patterson are 4th plus 4s. Solberg commented that he has made some changes to the car and he is pleased with the times. Petter is obviously up against it though, as a private entrant trying to beat the factory cars.
