There is a massive race at the front of this Fisher Engineering backed Lakeland Rally with never more than a second separating Alastair Fisher from Jonny Greer in their respective Lancers. When Kenny McKinstry brought his Impreza in here to service in Garrison he told us. “I’ve had a good run this morning. I’m going as quick as I want to go. I have had a couple of moments when I hit a front wheel on a “don’t cut” and another place where I ran wide on mud and clipped a tree trunk, but really I lost little time”. Alastair Fisher said. “It is taking me a wheel to get back into gravel mode and I’ve had a couple of small overshoots. Jonny did a gravel rally last weekend and it shows. I think the stages are slightly bumpier than last year”. When we asked Alastair about the big bump dip in the Carrigans stage where he damaged the front of his Lancer last year, his co-driver Gordon Noble said. “Alastair got me to mark that well in the notes this time!” Jonny Greer told us that he is having a good run although he found the last section of stage 4 quite cut up but that has been as a result of the very heavy rain earlier this week.
Donagh Kelly is still struggling with the new suspension on his Lancer. He is finding the car kicking back and very sideways on some of the corners. Mark Donnelly had a couple of moments in the long stage 3 over the jump dips. Martin Cairns lost a couple of seconds through stage 4 when very heavy rain arrived. Stuart Biggerstaff lost a couple of seconds in there when his concentration wandered as he searched for the heated front screen switch. Ian Cochrane has been setting a great pace through the opening 3 stages but wasn’t quite so quick through stage 4 when the rear differential seemed to take a mind of its own. Errol Clarke had a spin in the 3rd stage and is also having a few problems selecting gears in the standard box of his Lancer Evo6.
Frank Kelly found his wipers couldn’t keep up with the rain in stage 4 and he dropped another second to his big rival Adrian Hetherington. Vivian Hamill lost a few seconds in stage 3 when his Escort suffered a puncture. Patsy Keenan feels very unsettled but his times are not too bad at all, his total now 22.26.
