Garry Jennings was the fastest driver through the opening stage and he said at the finish line outside Convoy. “It was wild slippy. I was driving the Subaru like a Mk2 Escort!”. No.1 seed Niall Maguire reported a stall on the start line which cost him at least 7 or 8s. Seamus Leonard said of his Subaru’s brakes. “They seem a bit dicky”.

Camillus Bradley started 4th on the road but his red Escort stopped on that opening stage for several minutes due to a mechanical problem. Wesley Patterson slowed slightly when he was passing Bradley’s Escort just to make sure everything was OK. Wesley also lost a fraction with a half overshoot at a hairpin right. Manus Kelly had a few dodgy moments through the farm towards stage finish. Gary McPhillips had a brilliant run to be fastest Mk2 Escort driver. Declan Boyle felt his Escort was slightly down on power.

Donagh Kelly was the best of the early group N runners in his new red Lancer. When Donagh tested the car for the first time mid week he thought the engine was down on power and there was a quick overhaul done before the start of the rally. Stuart Darcy had a time of 6.20 in his newly acquired GpN Lancer and he said that he’s still getting used to the car. Pat Kirk had a good run to hold 2nd in Group N.

Some other times from th early runners include John O’Donnell on 6.30 as he gets used to his hired Escort. Brian Brogan had a 6.15 and Adrian Hetherington said he was being a bit cautious to start. His time was 6.16.
