Last year’s winner Niall Maguire seems to have no answer to the speed of Garry Jennings and Seamus Leonard in similar Subaru World Rally Cars. Admittedly Niall has a very heavy cold but he told us that it is not affecting him at all and he is at a loss to explain his time loss over this morning’s 4 stages. Garry Jennings was fastest again through stage 4, by a whopping 15s on Maguire, and 9s up on Leonard. Garry’s co driver Neil Doherty said. “That stage 4 felt really good and I don’t think Garry has much left”. Seamus Leonard also reported a good run and said. “In all fairness I take my hat off to Garry”.

In the battle of the Mk2 Escorts Gary McPhillips still has the edge but he was just 1s faster than Wesley Patterson through stage 4. Manus Kelly was 1s down on Wesley. Adrian Hetherington was a couple of seconds further back. Declan Boyle was only 5th fastest of the Escorts but the Glenties man struggled towards the end of stage 4 when his Escort paddle shift gear change broke and it also looks as if the linkage is bent. Gary McPhillips reported no troubles at all and Wesley Patterson said. “I’ve not a whole lot left”. When we asked Wesley if there was much different between his own Escort and McPhillip’s example he reckoned they were both basically the same, except his is on 15 inch wheels and Gary’s on 13. Adrian Hetherington’s times have improved on every stage today and he said. “Yes, we’re starting to speed up. I’m getting my tarmac legs back!”

In Group N Pat Kirk’s survived a big moment in stage 4. The driver’s side of the car slipped into a ditch on a very narrow section, and somehow or another the passenger side brake caliper sheared off in the same incident. Donagh Kelly’s new Lancer is parked up in stage 4. Stuart Darcy was just a couple of seconds down on Kirk in stage 4 and Cyril Doherty was 5s down on Darcy. John O’Donnell’s Escort is off the road on a twisty section in stage 4. Geoffrey Dolan’s Sunbeam has stopped in stage 4, about a mile from his home. Gearbox problems seem to be the reason.
