For Welshman Melvyn Evans and his co-driver Patrick Walsh victory on this Fastnet Rally rounds off a fantastic Dunlop Championship winning year for the Subaru pair. Kevin Barrett and his co-driver Sean Mullally put up a really good show as well to take the runner-up spot today while Daragh O’Riordan/Tony McDaid finished the rally with a flourish by setting fastest time on the final stage. Earlier problems with a puncture and an errant turbo pipe plus a brake problem denied Daragh the chance of a better result.

Ed O’Callaghan/Ger Clancy’s 4th place in their Mk2 Escort was the result of a brilliant drive today and should net them the overall Southern 4 Rally C/ship title. Brian O’Mahony was their closest points rival and he has finished 1 place further back. Brian really needed to win today to take the title. Declan & Brian Boyle have finished 7th o/a and that should be good enough to win for them to win the rally.ie award for best 2 wheel drive in the Dunlop series. Eugene Meegan/Brian Sharkey surged through the last 2 stages to take Group N today from Thomas Fitzmaurice.

Sean Flanagan/Brian Duggan in their GpN Impreza made a cautious finish and are 3rd in the category but this result should be enough to ensure them GpN victory on the National c/ship plus our Patterson/s RallyNews Award in the series. Damien McCarthy & Eamonn Hayes had a great run today to finish 11th o/a in their Civic and win cl.11, 22s up on their hard chasing rival John Hendy in his Corolla TC.

After the final stage Melvyn Evans said. “It was a good rally. The stages were great and everything ran well. I’ve had a great season, won 6 out of 9 rallies and broke down on one. I should retire now when I’m at the top, but its like a drug, this rallying, have to keep going”. Kevin Barrett said. “I’m absolutely happy. I kept the same tyres on all day and everything went well”. Daragh O’Riordan’s co driver Tony McDaid said. “The brakes were sorted, our troubles were out of the way and we had a real go at Kevin over the last 2 stages. His times show that when Daragh has the confidence he can drive the car”. Sean Flanagan brought his GpN Impreza into the finish and said. “I was so nervous over the last couple of stages I backed off and couldn’t even hear Brian calling the notes!” Kevin O’Connor/Andrew Purcell in a Citroen C2 won the Juniors from Cal McCarthy/Eamonn Dullea in their Civic.

Finally for now our thanks to all who supported and helped with our RallyNews service. Your backing is very much appreciated. Well done to Ger Hayes and his hard working Skibbereen MC team for laying on such a splendid rally. Thanks also to Dougie Hughes for distributing the RallyNews and to Angus Sealy for results. LATE NEWS: Craig Breen is one of the winners of the Pirelli International Shoot Out in Spain as is Molly Taylor and this entitles them to a paid for drive in the World Rally Championship in a 2 wheel drive car which will be either a Fiesta or a Twingo.
