RALLY NEWS NO.1 Saturday/Glenties

Obviously the big talking point here in Glenties as the time ticks away to the 11.00 am start is the weather. The Donegal countryside looked absolutely beautiful this morning under a sunny blue sky, but the icy conditions will make it very difficult for the drivers.

The clerk of the course Eamonn Magee, along with some of his team, have toiled through the night salting the roads from the back of a lorry. The boys have chucked around 20 tons of salt down, so hopefully that will have an effect and ease the conditions.

Local man Declan Boyle will lead the cavalcade of 90 cars away from the Limelight. As ever Declan’s Escort is sparkling, although a reflection really of all the top cars – we have one of the best line-up of Escorts ever here. Daniel McKenna, Wesley Patterson, Manus Kelly, Camillus Bradley and Damien Gallagher make up the top six in their Escorts. Damien has worked night and day to get his Escort ready for this rally, following a long lay-off.

The first non-Escort is the GpN Lancer of Donagh Kelly (No.7). Donagh has a new gearbox fitted to the car, as the previous unit blew to bits on the Harvest. Also in GpN is Stuart Darcy, his Lancer having had some work done to the ECU over the last couple of weeks. Brian Brogan starts at 8 in his Escort, and he has Damien McGettigan now slotted in as co-driver.

Some of the top names non-starting include Eugene Ferry (No10), Conor Harvey (No16), Gary McElhinney (No19), Columba Heena (No20), Dermot Cannon (No21), Stephen Furey (No28). Another co-driver slotted in is Patrick Brides with Joe McGonigle (No30). Car 103 is now John Bustard/Robert McKelvey in a GpA Lancer and they start in the top 20. Mark Wedlock/Adam Kinkade have No.109 on their Escort and they will run 18th on the road.

The big talking point is still the state of the roads of course. An enormous amount of work has gone into getting the rally this far so hopefully the weather and the state of the roads will allow everything to go ahead.
