Through the streaming wet Ballinascarthy stage it was Robert Barrable in his Skoda who set fastest time. Robert’s co driver Damien Connolly told us afterwards that the clock stopped on 8m13s.7. Kevin Kelleher recorded 8.14.2. Colm Murphy 8.14.3. Daragh O’Riordan was 4th fastest but wasn’t happy with his own driving and he recorded 8.17.2. Danny Barry was furious with himself in that he dropped over half a minute when his Lancer kicked over a jump cross roads and slithered into the ditch damaging the front suspension. Robert Barrable was the next car on the road and caught up with the ailing black Lancer, but even with that Robert was still fastest. The Barry Motorsport team has changed the front suspension on the Lancer and it should be in good condition for the remaining 2 stages today. K
Rally leader Colm Murphy said here at service. “The car is handling great and the tyres are biting well. No problems”. Kevin Kelleher told us. “We had a very tricky morning and the manifold pressure sensor stopped working. Danny Barry lent us one which saved the day, then I spun the car at Rossmore Church and stalled the engine. That cost quite a few seconds. I found stage 5 to be very muddy and reckoned I lost a couple of seconds but had a good run through stage 6 which despite the rain wasn’t so slippy”.
No.2 seed John Dalton was looking fairly depressed when he brought his Darrian into service. He reported a really bad vibration type noise to his mechanics who then found a tooth broken off 4th gear. John felt that he could well decided to withdraw from the rally. As he said. “That’s rallying, you need the sequence of events to fall right!” Peter Lloyd/Martin Brady are lying just outside the top 10 and if Dalton does to decided to call it a day this will bring them on to the leaderboard. Peter has reportedly obtained some wet weather Pirelli tyres to try and combat the increasingly wet conditions. Trevor Mulligan is the highest placed Escort in 7th o/a and he felt this morning that his car wasn’t handling very well. He has since disconnected the anti roll bar and finds it a great improvement.
Damien McCarthy continues to set brilliant times and reports no problems at all with his Civic. Kevin O’Connor continued to lead the Citroen Racing Trophy contenders and remarked. “We are holding the reins back a bit now, no point in pushing too hard. We will try and maintain our lead for the rest of today. Some of the shiny tar is like ice.” Kevin got held up in stage 5 when Fintan Canty crashed his Escort on a slippy bit of road and blocked the stage. Fintan and his co driver Denis O’Mahony were reportedly uninjured. Mark Sheahan is 2nd of the Citroens and feels he is going a lot better this afternoon.
