Kenny McKinstry put the pressure on over this 2nd loop of stages to move into the lead from Donagh Kelly by 7s. When Kenny reached service he reported that everything was fine with the car, that he had had a good run and just how fantastic the stages are. Donagh Kelly did everything he could to resist Kenny’s charge and said. “We’re not far from maximum now. Maybe my tyres were a bit soft in the compound and the car was under steering but we did go well”.
We reported on the last RallyNews that Seamus Heron was off the road on stage 4. He did eventually get the Corolla WRC out of the ditch and has gone from approximately 2nd o/a to almost last but still set 2 good times through stages 5 and 6. In fact in stage 5 he was 2nd fastest to McKinstry. We also said on the last RallyNews that there was no sign of Camillus Bradley after stage 4. He did come through the stage with no problems and set 3 cracking times to move from 10th to 8th. Derek McGeehan has retired his Mk2 Escort with alternator problems.
Further stories include Pat Kirk clipped the rear quarter panel of his Lancer on stage 5 and lost a couple of seconds. Sean Haveron is going to change the turbo in his Escort Cosworth. Barry Greer retired his Lancer on the first stage when the car went through a hedge. Fintan McGrady went off on a hairpin earlier through some laurel bushes and into someone’s garden. Fintan got going with only a few seconds lost and hardly any damage.
Eamonn McCrystal/Frank Conville crashed their Escort on an earlier stage. The rescue services were called. Our latest information is that there are no serious injuries. Jonny Leonard/Jackie Elliott suspect they bent the valves on their car and they may have to retire. Stanley Ballantine lost quite a bit of time when his Lancer suffered a puncture. James Cassidy retired his Escort when the petrol bag tank collapsed and caused fuel starvation. Stephen Baxter lost time earlier with a puncture. Desi Henry was up to 6th o/a but his Citroen C2R2 has stopped early in stage 4, possible clipped wheel. Dara Leonard is leading his class.
