There was light drizzle before the cars started the Knockboy stage but the roads were mostly dry and at the finish of the 7.92 test last year’s Ulster Rally winner Derek McGarrity said. “There was more grip than I thought. The car is fine, I had a good run”. Tim McNulty was 6s down on McGarrity and reported all well. In Rally NI Garry Jennings was sensationally fastest from Marty McCormack, who was best two wheel drive. Elfyn Evans lost over 2m with a puncture and Mark Donnelly lost at least 1m with an electrical problem.

Down the daunting 9.9 miles of the Glendun stage Derek McGarrity was almost 5s faster than Tim McNulty. Tim was slightly disappointed until it was pointed out that the road down from Orra Road Bridge is where Derek tests his car. Marty McCormack was fastest of the Rally NI contenders and said he made a slowish start to the stage until his co driver David Moynihan gave him a figurative kick up the backside! Darragh O’Riordan finished the stage with his Impreza rear tyres pretty well done. The Cork man made the mistake of fitting intermediate tyres and the roads were bone dry. Following his first stage electronic problem Mark Donnelly got his Clio back on song, or partially so, and set a time just 5s down on Tommy Doyle in the similar Clio. Jonny Greer set a very respectable time but felt his Skoda S2000 very wide through the chicanes. Garry Jennings reminded us at the end of stage 2 that he has never been on these roads before and he feels at a disadvantage to the BRC runners.
Latest news from Rally Germany is that Loeb was fastest through SS5 and leads the event from Ogier with Hirvonen 3rd , Sordo and Meeke 4th and 5th in the new Mini and Petter Solberg 6th following his time loss earlier.
